Scotch Sampler

Of the million or so synth-pop bands they play on the indie stations, a few get my attention. Such is the case with this 2015 hit from the English band Hot Chip

Hot Chip – Huarache Lights

DIIV (pronounced dive) is a prototypical Brooklyn alternative band, that seems to always be there. This 2015 song of theirs is my favorite

DIIV – Under the Sun

Father John Misty is the not-so-serious project of Joshua Tillman. He's been making funny, folky music for many years, and has played with bands such as Fleet Foxes. This is one of his signature songs from 2015. Be sure to listen to the lyrics

Father John Misty – Chateau Lobby #4 (in C for Two Virgins) (live on Jools)

In 2016, the legendary PJ Harvey released The Hope Six Demolition Project, an album to raise money and awareness for the needy. It gave us this great song

PJ Harvey – The Wheel

Catching up. I missed this post somehow.
I like Hot Chip. DIIV isn’t too bad from what I’ve heard on SXM.
Misty is a bit too folky for me, but I’ve never noticed the lyrics before. Fun! I’ll pay more attention when he’s on again.
I like PJ. This one is good too.

Another post that slipped past me! It was the day after vacation, so that’s a lame excuse but it’s what I got.

M83 feat. Mai Lan – Go! (live on Jools)
I was indifferent to this the first couple of times I heard it till I noticed the solo. Then I really got into it. I like it when a song can pull off a shift like that and take it in another direction. When I found out it was Vai, it made sense. He recorded 3 takes of the solo and sent it to the band. They spliced different parts of the various takes together to make the final recording. Their guy does a really good job of it.
De La Soul feat. Snoop Dogg – Pain
Love De La Soul.
Snoop! Snoop-a-Loop!!! Come on guys. We’re all goin streaking! Bring your hat. Let’s go!
Everything is better with a little Snoop Dogg.
Jagwar Ma – OB1
This is KILLER! I it reminds me of Lo-Fi All Stars, Kasabian, and a few others. I need to add some Jagwar to my collection.
Portugal. The Man – Feel It Still
It was a overplayed for a while, but I still like it.

Same here, in the XMU rotation, it would come on, and be just like 100 other dance/electronic songs. But after a few times, I said to myself "wait, that's one awesome guitar solo at the end". And I looked into it, and it was Vai. And then I saw the video, and those Mai Lan girls ain't half bad looking.

In the indie world, they're all "abuzz" about Angel Olsen. She's talented, brash, stylish, makes good lyrics, and hits those retro-60s vibes that people like. A darling of music reviewers, I'll admit I'm only familiar with a few of her songs. She'd be worth checking out, if you're so inclined.

Her 2016 album My Woman, which also contains the singles Intern and Sister, made her a mainstream success with this hit

Angel Olsen - Shut-up Kiss Me (live on Colbert)

A year later, she released Phases, a compilation album. Then in 2019, she came out with All Mirrors, which gave us the single Lark, plus the powerful title track

Angel Olsen – All Mirrors (live on Fallon)

She put out another album last year, plus she currently has a duet with Sharon Van Etten that's getting airplay now.

And with this, I think I’m caught up!

Shes another one I know her name, but not the music, even though I see her pop up on SXM.
I like her. She’s like a cleaned up nice-girl version of Courtney Barnett. I like Courtney better, but I’ll pay more attention when Angel shows up.

When I first covered Spoon, I mentioned that they had some really good stuff that's come out more recently. Well it's time to get to those!

In 2017, they made a big impact with the album Hot Thoughts. It has a bunch of songs that got radio airplay, such as Can I Sit Next to You, and these

Like many Spoon songs, the title track has a nice groove to it

Spoon – Hot Thoughts (live)

And this is another one of their slow grind funk tunes

Spoon – Do I Have to Talk You Into It (live)

As a bonus, they put out a compilation album in 2019, and it had this great new song on it

Spoon – No Bullets Spent

I've covered St. Vincent up to 2014, but her 2017 follow-up, Masseducation, was another strong album. It had a theme of places; these were the two premier tracks

The video is integral to the song

St. Vincent – Los Ageless

This may hold the record for most bleeped song on broadcast radio rotation

St. Vincent – New York

She put out another great album just this year, but I'm going to hold-off on that for now.

The video is integral to the song
Wild outfits. Pretty cool song!
This may hold the record for most bleeped song on broadcast radio rotation
5 F bombs? Sorry but not even close.

I heard this on a rock station back when it came out and thought, "Why [SILENCE]-ing bother??" 5 edits already within the first 35 seconds. I counted 21 total.

Then there's the clean version of this one (8 edits). Here are three different ways they edited it. I like the first one best.

St. Vincent – Los Ageless
I love this song. The break is killer. I think they added a second one for the radio edit. (Or removed one for the video edit.)

Shes great. I hope she keeps doing cool stuff.
Guess I should have added that it got played on AC radio.
I was going to mention Rage Against the Machine, but they didn’t quite manage to cross over to AC radio like they had hoped. Bummer.

Here's another update of a band we've covered here. But in this case, the band had broken-up after their 2010 album release. They even did a farewell tour. Like Sleater-Kinney had done in 2005, LCD Soundsystem hung it up in 2010. Then, two years after S-K's 2015 return, LCD released American Dream. Singles from the album include the dance-club-ready Tonight, and these

Another album, another epic LCD Soundsystem tune

LCD Soundsystem – Call the Police (live)

While not a favorite song of mine, the movie-like video was directed by Rian Johnson, and stars Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn

LCD Soundsystem – Oh Baby

Correction: Autocorrect tried to handle the album title, and muffed it up. It's Masseduction.

The management deeply regrets any confusion which may have resulted from this error.
Correction to my correction: Annie Clark (St. Vincent) put out an acoustic version of the album, and called it MassEducation. So, whatever.
