Scotch Sampler

Here's another update of a band we've covered here. But in this case, the band had broken-up after their 2010 album release. They even did a farewell tour. Like Sleater-Kinney had done in 2005, LCD Soundsystem hung it up in 2010. Then, two years after S-K's 2015 return, LCD released American Dream. Singles from the album include the dance-club-ready Tonight, and these

Another album, another epic LCD Soundsystem tune

LCD Soundsystem – Call the Police (live)

While not a favorite song of mine, the movie-like video was directed by Rian Johnson, and stars Sissy Spacek and David Strathairn

LCD Soundsystem – Oh Baby

These guys are great. There's so much more going on than you realize at first blush.
The full-on analog, non-programmed, real-life performances of their music is really cool, and fun to watch.

When I first covered Spoon, I mentioned that they had some really good stuff that's come out more recently. Well it's time to get to those!

In 2017, they made a big impact with the album Hot Thoughts. It has a bunch of songs that got radio airplay, such as Can I Sit Next to You, and these

Like many Spoon songs, the title track has a nice groove to it

Spoon – Hot Thoughts (live)

And this is another one of their slow grind funk tunes

Spoon – Do I Have to Talk You Into It (live)

As a bonus, they put out a compilation album in 2019, and it had this great new song on it

Spoon – No Bullets Spent

I like these guys, and obviously know some of their songs from the radio.
I think I’ve heard the first one of this batch, but not sure of the other two. I dig em And they should get some airplay.
They are really tight live!

Yes, I was happy to see that the quality of the Austin City Limits live performance was great, because visually it's an awesome spectacle to see. That one synthesizer looked like, well

It's kind of like watching a full symphony play. You keep looking around to see who is doing what, and where the different sounds are coming from.

It's music as a spectator sport. Well, it's at least a non-pit version of it.

In 2018, Parquet Courts released Wide Awake!, giving us more straight-ahead garage rock tunes. Aside from the title track, there's Mardi Gras Beads, Freebird II, and this great two-parter

Parquet Courts – Almost Had to Start a Fight/In and Out of Patience

They have some new stuff coming out now, for a release later this year.

In 2018, a talented young British singer-songwriter named Jade Bird started getting airplay on American AC radio. At the time, it was just one song, a powerhouse ballad. I became interested, and looked further into her career. As it turns out, at an even younger age, she was recording cover songs that were available on YouTube, such as Johnny Cash's I've Been Everywhere, and this Pixies tune

Jade Bird – Where Is My Mind (Pixies cover) (live acoustic)

The following year she released an EP named Something American, which had mostly folky, country ballads. The song Cathedral got airplay in some markets. Then, in a move that parallels Alanis Morissette, she releases a song with a punch, and evocative lyrics, and it puts her on the map

Jade Bird – Lottery (live)

While she still had no album out, more songs were making their way to the radio. And as she starts touring, we get to hear her talent for performing live, as in this foot-stompin' tune

Jade Bird – Uh Huh (live)

In 2019, her eponymous album was released, with all the singles on it, including this one

Jade Bird – I Get No Joy (live)

I haven't heard anything else from her since then, although I see she's got an album coming out now.

But his peak was hit in 2014 with the well-engineered, highly developed themed album Manipulator. He put everything into this one, and it includes high-level videos and all. The most popular song for radio airplay is Tall Man Skinny Lady, which I think is kind of pedestrian. The album opens with the title track, and has a familiar "Sgt. Pepper's" sound to it. Then The Singer has a slick video, but I like the sound of this rocker

Ty Segall – It’s Over

Later, he gets into this groovy jam

Ty Segall – Feel (live)

This great track is a long way from garage punk

Ty Segall – The Hand

And finally, a funky song that was also a radio hit

Ty Segall – Susie Thumb

He kind-of went off the rails (musically) after this album, but he put out this great cover in 2017

Ty Segall – Every 1’s a Winner (Hot Chocolate cover)

They just played Segall’s Whisper on XMU the other day.
I saw his name pop up on my favorites, so I switched over.
this one‘s pretty good too.

Yes, that's from his latest. It's good.

I dig it.

I probably wouldn't have changes the station to listen to it if I hadn't read your review. :hatsoff:
Unless the Smiths were on. Then I would have changed to the whatever station I could click on first.

What if it was Rock Lobster

For many, especially among reviewers, Greta Van Fleet was a joke. Pitchfork called them stiff, hackneyed, overly precious retro-fetishism. Yet due to the style of the music - a shameless throwback to Led Zeppelin - they rose to the top of the popular rock band heap. They were nominated for 4 Grammys, and won 1. And their name got mentioned as often as the Black Keys, with the perception they were the only rock bands left.

Personally, while I don't take them seriously, I do remember liking the first song I heard from them in 2017. Here it is, complete with the poorly-lip-synced video

Greta Van Fleet – Highway Tune

But it was a year later that they came out with a song, which I felt was more their own. And performed live, they actually show talent, even the elfin little singer.

Greta Van Fleet – You’re the One (live)
