Shotguns: Remington 870 vs Mossberg 590

I'm getting one of these two shotguns listed. :twisted: :guns:

I'm looking for personal experiences from anyone who might recommend one either way.

So far, I love the action of the 870 and know it's a reliable weapon. However, being left handed, I find the safety and action lock difficult to manipulate.

On the other hand, the Mossberg feels a lot better in this regard.

Hard call. I've shot the Mossberg and liked it. But, Remington makes some solid weapons. I guess it would depend on how ofter you're planning on using it - a lot of shooting, go with Remington. Home protection, Mossberg would work just find, especially if you're more comfortable with it.

I have personal experience with both and can offer a bit of history on the Remington side of things. (stay with me as i'll get to the point eventually) Roughly 10 years ago Remington got an infusion of cash from a group of investment bankers who appointed themselves to heads of the company. One of the first things they did was to hold a few states hostage in the form of the old "give us tax breaks and will we move our headquarters to your state" type of scam. Next thing you know the company is building a new headquarters in Madison, NC which happens to be on my package delivery route. The address of the building is 870 and they are the only building on Remington drive btw. These bankers, once they got done building new mansions and golf courses in the area start looking at the expenses of building shotguns. Before you know it the quality of the 870 and other guns slips bit by bit for the next few years and continues to do so. Most recently they have started cutting back on the polishing of the bores and on the type of steel they are using.

So in a nutshell, if you buy an 870 get a pre 2001 model. Thats the year they started changing the guns. The changes are not obvious to the average gun owner, but ask any gunsmith and they will tell you the same thing.

I like my 9mm for home defense. It seems easier to wield in close quarters and you can work it with one hand. (I know, I know, "that's what she said!") Of course, it's easier to club someone with the butt of a shotgun.

I'd question the stopping power of 9mm. I was (un)fortunate enough to see a police shooting at the last station I was at. The locals who had 9mm put like 15 rounds into this guy. The dude, with broken ankle and wrist, was still able to put lead down range.

Once they broke out the AR-15s, it was a different story.

Nevertheless, the 12 gauge seems good for CQB situations with the retractable stock and shorter barrel and you don't have to aim it superbly.

I'm heading over to a gun shop tomorrow to see what sort of versions of each they have and get some prices. After that, I think I'll pull the trigger.

I'm sure enough I could get the job done with the first two rounds. There's 15 more after that, just in case. The odds are bigger that someone will get into your house while you're not home anyway.

Pulled the trigger and got this - Mossberg 590A1 12 gauge, 18.5" barrel with SpeedStock. Just over $400 with tax. The old lady was NOT happy.

Only difference is that I don't have the Ghost Ring sites.

Comes with a cable lock. Plus I have a few from my work. I'm going to keep the action locked, plus keep it in a locked case in our bedroom. Should be secure. :egypt:

Shot the hell out of the 590 yesterday. Let's just say 3" magnum slugs and my shoulder don't get along.

Had a great time, got the patterning down and blew holes in all sorts of bad guys.

590 FTW!!
