And I found a little 15-watt Line6 amp on the same site for $99 (I live in an apartment, don't want anything that's going to get me evicted).

I've never really spent any time on a Strat. I mean, they're the most popular guitar ever, so you can't go wrong.
Everything I've heard about strats, they are as easy as telecasters to play, if not easier. I may just get a Squier strat and get the American Standard Telecaster when I can come up with the money.

They have the same radius fretboard (9.5") which is a big reason they're easier to play. Harder to shred on (which is something I will never do) but easier to play chords. When I have picked up a Strat one of the things I notice is that the fretboard is very accessible. Same with the tele. Probably because I'm so used to playing a big dreadnought acoustic...

If I bought another electric (which I won't, not for a good while, anyway) I think I'd want something that's a departure from the typical designs. And something with humbuckers. Like a Danelectro!

Overall it'll cost me $180 for the guitar, $99 for the amp, maybe $40 for the cable. All told about $400 after taxes.

maybe $40 for the cable

$40?! Are you going to buy, like, six? :D

I think my first rig was $349 for the guitar (my former Ibanez semi-hollow), $99 for the used Fender amp , $40 for six cables :p and about $25 for a strap. It all came to around $500, which was mostly money given to me for my 40th birthday from my dad.

I would go cheaper on the patch cable and buy a set of (cheapish) over-the-ear headphones so you can jam in your apt. and not worry about the neighbors. You'll get better bass response and more comfort than from the buds you probably already own.

Speaking of which, do you want a leather strap? I have a tan Levy's strap with Schaller pins on it (strap end only...stupid me sold the guitar with the guitar ends still attached ) lying in the floor...

Those are what locks the strap on the guitar, right? That might be useful when I do get it. I don't imagine the guitar end would be too difficult to acquire at my local shop.

Yes, yes and no.

A lot of the brands that have made outside the USA lines have them built in the same factory. Ibanez, Squire, Cort, and G&L use the same Korean factory. ESP's Japanese factory makes em for someone else too. With the automated milling they use these days, they can build em almost anywhere and you'd never know the difference without looking at the label.

Oh, and don't buy the cheapest cable. It'll buzz and they break too easily. It's only a few extra bucks for a decent one that will last a long time.

10 foot? That won't run down my pant leg, let alone give you enough length to reach anything farther than your amp. It looks like it's decent thickness and build though.

This is the cheap that I'm advising against.

Molded plastic ends, no shielding. Buzz & break. Bleh....

Hey, not all of us are "rock stars" in "bands," Mr. Bandy Banderson on his way to a gig. I play in a desk chair on wheels right next to my amp. The main purpose of the extra eight foot of cable is to provide me something to roll over.

So, what are the odds that Jon electrocutes himself the first time he plugs in?

With a cheap ass cable, the odds are higher.

It doesn't need to be the full bradded, gold tipped, 24 footer.
A shielded 15 footer with metal ends will last years and give you room to move about the room a bit. I had one that lasted 15 years. Well with the couple extra bucks over the $10 Cheapo.

I know with all the wannabe Jimi Hendrix monkeys manhandling the demo equipment at Guitar Center, their cords were plenty buzzy and static-riddled. Took me three tries to find a good one to try out the telecaster.

I hate it when my cord is buzzy and static riddled after being manhandled by wannabe Jimi Hendrix monkeys!

Now, Christina Hendricks is another story.

I've got a couple of slides, but never put in enough time to make em sound any good.
Been thinking about learning Ain't No Rest For The Wicked lately,
