The Musical Instrument Thread

I saw some of the Beatles documentary stuff a while ago. They were great at using the studio like another instrument. Very creative ways to influence the process.
I have my bass players basses at my house right now. There's a neck through Ibanez, and a Music Man 5 string. Really nice axes.

Still digging the Strat? When do we get a vid?
Bags should owe us something too. I know he's been making some music in the style of Eno.

Video is gonna be a while. I have a lot of work to do before I have anything near video-worthy. That's one of my main goals this year is to improve my technique.

And yes, still digging the strat. And my acoustic is getting some love lately too.

I went to the old time jam tonight. It was a lot of fun. Three hours of just playing tunes. We had some good mandolin and fiddle players there to keep things respectable. I'm the fuzzy guy in the center with the spruce-topped guitar.

Some things I learned:

Old time songs don't neatly follow I-IV-V. I kept thinking, "Why aren't the f*ckers playing E?"

These guys don't do barre chords. One song had an F#m and the mandolin player next to me, who is a good guitar player, told me to capo up. I just played it on the second fret with a full barre like I always would and he said, "I don't fool around with barre chords. I never played electric." I said, "Most electric guitar players would just play the power chord." Weird. I know the guy pretty well so we banter a lot. His wife is VP of my board at work.

It was at a boutique store downtown that unfortunately is closing Dec. 31. The group usually meets in Roanoke one week and sort of in the suburbs the alternate week. But their Roanoke locations have dried up (before the store they met at a coffee shop) and they're looking for a new location in town. A colleague of mine's wife owns another coffee shop in town in a big old brick house, and they've been trying to build a good vibe there. They have a porch you can sit on in the warm months, and people play cornhole in the front yard. Plus, they have plenty of room inside. I'm going to ask the owner if she'll let the group meet there twice a month. It's good pub for the store, and who wouldn't want about 25 customers coming in?

As long as you're buying coffee and biscuits, it should be good in the hood.

If you're all drinking espresso, you'll end up playing Old Time Thrash Blues by the end of the night.

I'm working on the basic finger exercises and scales as usual, and I'm learning how to play Nugent's "Cat Scratch Fever" which is a pretty simple song, I just wanted to get the basic parts during the vocals, and the solo down.

I'm already eyeballing the Line6 Amplifi 75 model so I can match tones to the songs I play. Only $400!

I wrote down about 8 or 10 of the songs we played last night and found the music online tonight. Gonna print it out and will bring it to the next jam to see how this group's version of things compares to the interwebs. It's funny--these guys played for an hour and a half exclusively in D, then announced they were switching to A. I don't know if that's a big deal for the banjo players or mando players or something, but of course as long as we guitarists know the key, any key, the playing is the same, especially if you use a capo or just use movable chord shapes.

I went to my second old time music jam tonight and actually used one sheet of the music I printed and brought! It's very hard to play with this group, although it's fun. I don't know any of the music. I've attempted to play old time music exactly twice, and these guys have been living this stuff for decades. But fortunately, I always know the key (hint: it's always D. Always.), and even though I can't really follow the chord changes because these songs change chords every time a bird farts, I can play a little improvised solo on the major scale that's in tune.

I've seen Paul play with Mr Big, and Nathan play with Clapton. I got Paul's autograph after their set. He came out to meet and greet while Rush's equipment was getting set up.

Went to my first ukulele jam tonight. It was a hoot. Took my youngest son with me. One of the organizers brought his Kala U-Bass with him and I played that about half the time to give the group some bottom end. If you aren't familiar, the U-Bass is basically a standard tuned bass on a uke body with a 21" scale length, big rubbery strings and a pickup. I wouldn't buy one, and it could never replace a Fender for tone in a real band, but it was fun.

Here's a video example, but I sing a lot better than this guy: o_O

9 pm? 9 pm on a Monday? The first meeting of the year of the Blue Ridge Blues Society begins at 9 pm on a Monday. I can't start stuff on a Monday night at 9 pm. I have to be at my kid's school at 7:30 am to run the school store, and then go work out. That means I'm up at 6:30 am. I need a solid eight hours sleep if I'm going to diet and lift. That means being in bed by 10:30 pm.

The other groups I'm in END at 9 pm. I'm too old and too dad for this crap.
