The Musical Instrument Thread

Well, they say it's not really your guitar until it's been in the pawn shop.

Jon, what don't you like about the sound you get out of your guitar?

They do make single coil size mini humbuckers.

Also, dammit, the trem bar is the wrong size. I thought for sure I needed a 6 mm. Fortunately, return shipping to Amazon is free. I'm going to have to go to the hardware store and buy a 5 mm and 10-32 bolt to see which one fits. :dunno1

I got Seymour Duncan Screamin Deamons for the Toothpick. I didn't install a neck pu, but the one I put in the middle position is a double coil that's the same size as a Strat single coil. I wired it split to a push/pull pot so I can get the single coil tone or double coil.

And in other news, I saw Rob Zombie tonight. It was a decent show. John 5 was with him. He didn't shred as much as I would lave liked, but he was still fun to watch. He pretty much switched guitars for each song, and most of them were some form of Telecaster. He had most of his gimmick guitars, the LED, the lava lamp, and one with a video screen in it. They only played for about an hour and a half though. Seeing Rush Sunday. I know they will play for about 3 hours. Just sayin.

That's cool. Was the show that bright or is that just the exposure of the shot?

John 5's telecasters with two humbuckers aren't telecasters. They're single cutaway planks of wood with two humbuckers. The twangy bridge pickup/lipstick cover neck pickup combo is what makes the guitar. :D

That was the first song. It was an outdoors show. It got darker......

You mean the thaw has arrived in Toledo? Fascinating...how long are the days?

John has a massive collection of telecasters.

Sorry. I meant his signature Squier model. All gold with two hb's.

So, more bad news and good news. I took the strat to the local shop down the road to see if they had a tremolo bar that fit, and it turns out that there is the remains of one broken off inside the block. So, I either get a new bridge or play without the trem, but the trem was why I got the thing in the first place.

Also, the truss rod adjustment looks like...a gouged piece of metal where the end of the truss rod used to be. I see a new neck in the distant future.

The good news is that it looks like no one has jury-rigged the wiring when I took off the pickguard.

Additional good news is that the paint seems to chip off very easily, so getting the coat of "eBay Black" off shouldn't be too hard.

Well, I wanted a project, and now I have one! At least it's playable in its present state.

Winter is finally over. We're up to monsoon season now. It rains at least twice a day. The rain started again last night about 15 minutes after the show ended.

Can you use an easy-out or something to extract the end of the trem bar? What kind of whammy is it? I have the Fender fulcrum bar that was on the Toothpick when I bought it. If it will fit, I'll send it to you. I won't use it again.

It's raining here right now. It's doing so because I watered the flowers earlier, and nature loves to fark with me apparently.

Yeah, I think I'm going to try to drill it out. I've never done that before. I can acquire a new set of tools and it will give me an excuse to clean out my tool boxes. Thanks for the trem bar offer--it's the six point style tremolo and the bar is 5 mm, I think. It's definitely not 6.

Cool. I'll double check, I think mine is the old 2 point, but I'll let you know.
The guy that owned it before me put it on to replace the factory wham. It still has a $50 price sticker on it.

I can't get any good distortion tone out of it, mainly. The clean sounds are real good. I have a Line 6 amp that I can pretty much adjust the tone to my liking, but I can't get much out of it with the standard pickups on the strat.

Are you keeping the volume low because of you're neighbors? Volume makes a huge difference for tone.

Seymour Duncan has an page on their website where you can listen to the sound of each of their pickups in different positions on on the guitar with different tones. They do a good job of describing the kinds of music they are best suited for too. I spent a long time farting around before I picked the Screamin Deamons.

Isn't your Line 6 a modeling amp? It should have a distorted setting.

I tried to drill out the remains of the broken trem arm with an easy-out type product, but the cheap metal of the bar wouldn't hold the bit. Apparently what happened is someone really cranked the poop out of the trem bar, and then hit it so hard that it snapped off right where the threads start in the sustain block.

GFS sells a replacement block for $21.95 that's a bit long for an Affinity but is supposed to work fine if you mill about 3/16" off the end. I think that's my next step.

Oh, and by "mill," I have two options: I know some folks that own an iron works company (railings, staircases, etc.) and could probably get the owner to mill off the end of the sustain block. But Hectic, do you I could cut the end off a sustain block made from cheap steel with a hacksaw?

For 3/16" I would think it's easier to shave out a little of the wood from the pocket instead. A hack saw would be a bizich to keep a clean cut. A grinder might be easier if you want to stick with the metal. Just don't let it get too hot.

It is a 6 screw type. The toothpick was made in the mid 80's, I bought it in the late 80's. The sticker on the wham was $50, so I'm guessing it's a bit vintage.

PM your address, and it's free if you want it.

It's not that the block would be too wide, it's that it's too deep. It would stick out the back of the guitar because my Affinity is only 1.5" deep and not the standard 1.75". However, a guy on another forum clued me into this:

Genuine Fender Chrome Squier 99 Affinity Strat Guitar Tremolo Bridge Assembly | eBay

It's for a '99 Affinity with 2 1/16" spacing; mine is a 2000 with the same spacing. For $14 it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the offer of the trem assembly. Let me see where I get with the other options first. Some Fender stuff doesn't fit Squier stuff and the trem assembly is one such part.

I'm actually neutral on the fact that the truss rod is upgefuckt since I want to go with a maple board eventually anyway.

Yeah it is a modeling amp, I can set it to sound like George Harrison or James Hetfield with the right turn of the dial. But the pickup upgrade is something I've been considering anyway (beyond buying a new guitar and it's way too new to do that!) Because I can't turn it up to loud without getting evicted, I can't test the distortion at certain volumes.
