I skimmed through a bio on him. Sounds like one of those Thomas Kincade types, who merged art with an assembly line. The fact that he graduated from Art school, and then became a commodities broker, says a lot about who he is, and what he represents.
I guess the rich need to create things to invest in, and then build it up to perpetuate the value of their investment. So this guy's just the lucky one who got picked.
Alternately, he's a great artist. He makes things no one ever thought of before that bring joy to all who see them.
Thomas Kincade had no sense of irony. His schlock was honest, earnest schlock. Koons' schlock is a gag that we're all in on. We can enjoy the kitsch and laugh at ourselves for enjoying it.
His big shit eating grin says everything you need to know about who he is and what he represents.
Ideas are a commodity and he's a great salesman.
The "balloons" are made of stainless steel, by the way. He copied balloon animals and cheap inflatable toys in great detail in a very heavy medium. Well, he hired people to do it and supervised their work.
He's been sued repeatedly for copyright infringement. He takes existing images and objects and duplicates them as art.
You can now buy a cheap Chinese copies of his balloon dogs on Amazon for under $20.
