"Not dead... just resting"
I still trying to understand soccer better and has anybody heard of this player?

Didier Drogba signs with USL's Phoenix Rising as player and executive - ESPN FC

His best days are long gone - was very very good at Chelsea, but can drop like a sack of potatoes at the slightest breeze from a defender. Played in China for a bit - so his bank balance is healthy. Since the MSL is a European retirement league - I would consider this move being put out to pasture. The only other couple of players more annoying are Joey Barton and Nicolas Anelka - who are both talented but total pratts. The latter no longer plays, the former is annoying Burnley fans at the moment after screwing up at Rangers (Glasgow). However, I digress - Drogbas move is akin to being a player/manager in League Two in Scotland or there abouts :)

This.

Football in North America has always been a place where foreign stars come to spend their final years.

Pelé. Beckham. Drogba
There are some great players from OS playing - including the Wright-Phillips brothers , I just don't see Drogba as an Ambassador for the game, in the same way as a Gerrard or a Lampard type of personality.... but who am I to know being just another opinionated aging football fan. :)

Beside Drogba and Omar Bravo, Phoenix Rising FC does have one of the brothers playing for the team Shaun Wright-Phillips.

Official: Didier Drogba joins Shaun Wright-Phillips at Phoenix Rising FC - Once A Metro

I don't know anything about these players, but I guess I should at least check out one Phoenix Rising game as long the weather is still nice.

For those who came in late:

Mario

Interesting to see his value roller-coaster, and his contract is up at the end of June. Give the man a t-shirt deal and he is yours. :)

I would go to see Shaun play - he is one of the players that fits into the "play until I drop" class - or was the last time I saw him play. He was good a Man. City - but went off the pace a bit for EPL

Bickley: Soccer revolution is hitting Phoenix

Signing Drogba delivers exposure to Phoenix Rising MLS expansion bid - ESPN FC

As for the present, the benefits of having someone of Drogba's stature on board have already begun to materialize. Bakay said that within an hour of the announcement the club sold nearly 300 tickets. The club is also moving ahead with plans to expand its current stadium so it will hold 10,000 fans, the better to keep up with demand. All of this sends a message to MLS as well.

I watched Phoenix Rising FC games off and on this season mainly on YouTube. The team has gotten better through out the season and the game does look partially exciting. So this Saturday will be the Phoenix Rising FC last game of the season and I finally bought tickets and will be my first soccer game. I will see Omar Bravo, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Didier Drogba in action. Plus the team earned a playoff spot couple weeks ago.

Yesterday Phoenix Rising FC owners has acquired PDL's Tuscon FC team.

FC Tucson sold to Phoenix club; Jon Pearlman to stay on as GM

They will use them as a farming system and I heard, one of the main reasons why, Phoenix Rising FC acquired them. If Rising FC can become an MLS team, they will probably move Tuscon FC from from PDL's to the USL as a D2. Like how Seattle, L.A. and Portland has a 2nd team there.

Last night, I attended my first ever soccer match and it was pretty exciting. Phoenix Rising FC scored 2 goals way early in the game and Didier Drogba was fantastic, he did couple of the assists and one goal. Which they defeated Portland Timbers 2 4 - 1. I didn't see Omar Bravo, Shaun Wright-Phillips play last night and they weren't injured. I guess, they were saving them for playoffs?

But either way, I got into the game and definitely attend another one next year but not during the summer months. There was over 6,700 fans in the stands and they announce they finished off the season wither over 100,000 fans attending there games. The supporting groups section were totally into it, sounded like a college game and setting off a few smoke bombs.

Now hopefully MLS can pick Phoenix as an MLS expansion franchise.
