TBH, the fact that he even saw the impending collision is surprising. I can totally see that in that split second, the idea of trying to successfully jump the guard rail (without being tripped up) just to be on the other side of the impact point, seemed like not a good idea, compared to running away from the impact point.

But once he got away, he probably didn't know what other fallout there'd be, so then he went over the rail. Perhaps there'd be a fire, or explosion.

I think it was just his impulse response. He didn’t have time to think when it was happening. I‘m guessing that as he had a second to think, he stepped over the rail because it’s the reaction he should have been trained to do.

Agree with everything above. Except I'm not surprised he saw it coming because the car was probably making a shit ton of noise as it was barreling toward him.
