Congratulations, Sadchild!
This week's subject was "I Want To Break Free", the 1984 song from Queen that was a worldwide hit, but not America.
In 1980, the band scored two #1s with "Crazy Thing Called Love" and "Another One Bites the Dust". However, by 1984, it was now a cardinal sin to not have a music video accompanying a song thanks to MTV. So, the band dressed in drag to parody the British TV series
Coronation Street. The problem, however, was that MTV felt that a video with cross dressing was too inappropriate for the time. With no video play, "I Want To Break Free" only peaked at #45 in the States while it was a respectable hit worldwide.
And to think that today, MTV has virtually banned all music videos and now airs
RuPaul's Drag Race! Times sure have changed.
No game next week. We'll be back the week after!
