Congratulations, Koop! You won another WAI?!

This week's subject was Boys Don't Cry, the 1980s new wave band formed by Nick Richards, who bought the Maison Rouge recording studio in London in 1983. After a friend suggested that he looked like a rock star and could be one with his studio, Boys Don't Cry was born.

After watching a Clint Eastwood movie on TV, Richards wrote "I Want To Be A Cowboy" and decided to model its video after spaghetti westerns. Richards was told by MTV VJ Martha Quinn that they were not planning to air the video because it was too poppy. But, because it became a radio hit, they reversed their decision. Besides, the video does feature a metal legend: Motorhead's Lemmy Kilmister, who played one of the ruffians. He agreed to appear in the video as long as a bottle of Smirnoff was on the set.

The song was a #1 hit in New Zealand and #4 in Australia. In America, it just missed the Top 10 at #12. However, it flopped in Boys Don't Cry's homeland of the UK, peaking at #77. It was Boys Don't Cry's sole major hit.

BTW, they were not named after the popular song by The Cure. The origin of the name?
