Game 4; So if I watch the SkyCast broadcast. it tells you the last name of the player who is handling the puck, and as the puck is passed, it shows where the puck is going by showing a black line. While a good idea, I'm finding it too distracting and switched to the regular broadcast

Last night the Marlies opened the Cader Cup on the road in Chicago (Wolves). They are the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes. The Marlies were victorious with a 4-2 win. They lead the series 1-0. Next game is on Sunday in Chicago. First home game is game 3 on Tuesday. The Calder Cup is a best of 7 series with a 2-3-2 format.
The Chicago Wolves, the AHL affiliate of the Carolina Hurricanes, did not fare as good as their parent club. They lost 5-4 in overtime to the Marlies. The Marlies got 2 from their Captain Logan Shaw including the OT winner. The Marlies also scored on the playoffs first penalty shot to tie the game at 2 in the 2nd. The Marlies had a 4-3 lead until 16 seconds left in the 3rd but gave up the tieing goal.
The Marlies head to Toronto for the next 3 games up 2-0. The Marlies have won 6 straight road games for a 9-3 road record. They are only 5-4 at home.

The Toronto Marlies are 1 win away from a Caulder Cup. The house was packed as the Marlies returned home including my son and I (season ticket holders). The Marlies ground out a 1-0 victory. Our goalie was amazing. I won't try to type his name. His first name is Arthur. He is a Russian. The one goal was stopped (almost) by the Wolves goaltender and it sort of just trickled backwards and just over the line.
The other thing that happened was we would boo intensely whenever Cal Foote touched the puck. Occasionally a "No Means No" chant would break out. Foote is a Wolves defence-man and on of the 5 junior players involved in a gang rape scandal. The court case wound up being dismissed and the NHL lifted the suspensions. Only 2 of the players are active in hockey. Foote and Hart (the Las Vega$ goalie). Ironically Carolina fans were equally nasty to Hart when he was playing in the Stanley Cup games in Carolina while Foote may wind up playing for their own team.

The Marlies have won two Calder Cups. The first was in 2018 – and the second was today.

Yes, C98, The Toronto Marlies are Calder Cup Champions. I have never been to a final clinching game of any team before. So this was a first. The emotions were incredible.
The game itself was tense. The Marlies fell behind 2-0 in the 1st period. With under 2 minutes left in the period they got a goal which made it 2-1. The scored 3 more goals in the 2nd period to lead 4-2. In the dying seconds of the period the Wolves got one back although it was questionable. The ref should have blown the play dead as the puck was out of sight for several seconds under a pile of players.
The third period was scoreless although there were chances both ways.
It was exactly like the show on TV. We got to hear the traditional "I Feel Good" followed by "We Are The Champions" and "Celebration". The Marlies also selected "Beer For My Horses" and "Three Little Birds" as well.
They brought out all the players even the scratches. There was one guy who was in the road uniform with the number 72. It turns out he was a draft pick from last year who passed away. His dad was wearing the jersey on his behalf.
One interesting tidbit. The goalie playing for the Wolves was the starting goalie for the Leafs this year. When both of the Leafs starters got injured they claimed him off waivers from Carolina (who was trying to send him to the AHL) and he played in several Leaf games. He played poorly. The Leafs tried to send him to the Marlies but Carolina picked him back off waivers. Since he has started with Carolina they were able to do what they had started to do and sent him to the AHL where he played well. He played well in this series too just not as good as our Russian Goalie (who got MVP).
Hockey season is finally over. I am missing it this year already. A long wait until October.
BTW, a lot of Marlies are either going to be called up to the Leafs or are going to be FA. I don't expect much of the team next year. But I will bask in this for a while.

My son thinks our toughest opponent this year was the Cleveland Monsters who we met in the divisional finals. They were the #3 team and we won on a lucky goal in game 5 with 2 seconds left in the game. I think Scanton was. The Wolves were tougher than the 4-1 series score would indicate but not the toughest. My son thinks if Cleveland had of beat the Marlies, they would be Calder Cup Champions.
Aside from Rochester (the team we faced in the 3 game play in) no other opponent of the Marlies played the extra round of playoffs. We faced in order the #5 team (play in), #1 team, #3 team, #2 team (different division), #2 team (different conference). The Marlies were the #4 team in their division.
Several people have mentioned that they are happy to keep the names of the "Filthy Five" (#52 of the Wolves) off a cup. For the 2 that are still playing hockey in North America, I can't image their experience will ever be normal. But they made their own bed I suppose.
