Happy New Year everyone!

Let's talk about our most memorable parts of 2025 (good or bad) and any hopes for 2026.

I figured I'd leave out adding "Happy New Year" to the title so this thread is more evergreen to look back on and comment about 2025 as time passes.

If we remember something cool or interesting about 2025 in 2030 or whenever we can come here and chat about it.

So let's have at it!

I will always remember 2025 as my first year of retirement and keeping a journal of my activities as well as we are still here at DRC and I could blog my activities online here.
Good memories were the great Kentucky Derby race season from the prep races to the Triple Crown races. The horses had such good personalities this time. All the races were good but the Preakness was the most exciting when Journalism got boxed in by two horses and fought his way out and caught Gosger to win it. What courage

This was also a good summer for our neighborhood park. Construction on the new Gazebo was completed so everyone could see the flower bed my wife and I sponsor with no obstruction and it bloomed very well. And because of the new Gazebo and lights the city had three food truck nights and a concert for the first time. A good get together with some neighbors.

I guess my bad was the Badger football season

First trip to Costa Rica.

Participated in many protests.

Visited with more of my side of the family than we have in many years.

Had a really good summer.

Worked from home 99%.

First complete year with the Seacoast Wind Ensemble.

Did some major landscaping.

More good friends, less bad friends.

2025 had several memories.

The first was my winter visit to Columbus. It was the end of January and the first few days of February. It was me and my son. We visited family. We did our birthday there as well. We also did a side day trip to the Indianapolis for the WWE Royal Rumble.

We had another trip planned to the states to Pittsburgh to see a Penguins game in April. This was fun but tense as it was pretty dicey crossing the border. This was our last visit to the USA for the year. I wound up cancelling my summer trip to Columbus and we elected not to travel to any more USA hockey games this year.

I had a lovely almost 2 week visit with my dad at the lake in Saskatchewan this summer. It was good to get away and just enjoy the lake and had a good visit with my dad.

The Blue Jays are both a good and painful memory this year as well. So close but still hurts to think of the stupid Doger$ winning.

My hopes for 2026:
Relax at home and neighborhood more, take those kites I got to the park and fly, maybe a drone, adopt some guppies I've never had a pet before, actually learn a note on my guitar and throw my nice new football (a Christmas gift)

Plus all the fun activities I did in 2025, never got bored

My major 2025 events/memories. Most important to least.

1. July 30th I paid the vet to kill Athena. That was the first time I full on cried since my dad died in 2019. She was the last pet I ever had that will have known him. I kept it together well when she was actually getting the lethal injection but beforehand when I was in the execution room alone with her being all weak made me ball. It was not a good day. She was 16 and the first pet that was both truly mine and not my parents and that I had from more or less life to death. I loved that cat.

2. I fucked up a lot with Pam but apparently not enough for her to dump my ass. I really do love that lady.

3. Getting to see the Eagles beat the Bucs live in Tampa after a couple days at Disney was so freaking cool!!!!!! Disney trips are great memories but I go so often they blend together. This one clearly stands out so it's the only Disney mention on the list.

4. My issues that you all know about got worse this year.

5. Still have my house and job despite #4.

6. That early Christmas celebration with Pam at the hotel that faced the ocean was amazing. Truly a great memory.

7. I joined a New England woodwind group with my clarinet. We call ourselves Lips to the Tip. I appear to perform in the middle of streets located in cozy, idyllic small towns.............Hmmmmm............Come to think of it I'm not sure if that's my memory. If it's not mine, chalk it up to #4 again.

This will sound weird to Northerners but 2025 will always be remembered around here for the blizzard we got in January. How we go years with nothing, and maybe 2 decent snow events in my life to suddenly getting 10 inches of snow in one day, that stayed on the ground for 4 to 5 days. It's still a milestone event that gets talked about when you see someone you haven't seen in a few years... "hey, what about that blizzard we all got, how did y'all enjoy that?".

For 2026, I need to better manage work stress. My job is stressful, as are most people's jobs. Payroll is relentless. Every freaking week, there's another payroll. Constant deadlines and you're 'essential personnel'. Nothing stops payroll, weather events, staff out with the flu, holidays. I take anxiety meds, which do help somewhat. And then I always have an outlet to take my mind off things. For years it was fancy cooking. Then for the last 5 years, it's been movie watching. And that has been a great distraction from work in my off hours. But even that, I'm getting diminishing returns. I've seen so many movies from the past that the ones I'm watching now (from the past) are usually average. Guess I can re-watch some things or go for a series.

There's other stuff I'd really love to see happen in 2026, but it's out of my control, if that makes sense.

Ironically, it's these days we're having now, which makes me wish I was in a culvert in Florida.

January: Wife recovering from tumor removal.

February: New wood stove installed. MIT new music building grand opening, my son plays with the laptop ensemble.

March: My uncle was almost shot while ice fishing on Lake Winnepesauke. My cousin Scott passed away. I get tennis elbow.

April: Radon elimination system installed. My Punch-Out radio feature on WPNH FM canceled as they move from active rock to classic rock. Give my dad's caretaker a week off by covering for her.

May: Release my first music that's not hard rock/heavy metal as Hello Rangoon. My son starts an internship at Deka (Dean Kamen bio-med company).

June: Install sediment filter for our water. Third IT guy added to my department (it's been just two people in the dept for over 25 years).

July: Wife is told she has a 7mm kidney stone.

August: Replace water softener with water neutralizer. Relieve my dad's caretaker for another week. My son's oldest friend (known the longest) - his mother passes away.

September: Front lawn dug up by an excavator to repair our well. Wife has kidney stone removed.

October: Start jamming with a different ex-band member, we're just learning to play the whole Cure Disintegration album.

November: Replace hot water heater.

December: Told by an ENT doctor I'll probably need hearing aids soon. Release my first ever vinyl record.

You forgot your trip to York Beach.

Today, the Sadchild family was visiting the fun, touristy York Beach area. So the Scotch family arranged to meet them for ice cream in the less fun, less touristy area closer to our house. I was with Mrs. Scotch and the younger kid; he was with Mrs. Sadchild and their kid. He told me I should look for the guy with "the shirt", and now I know why. It was nice to meet them.

Have you been in this position a long time, or did you work your way up to this level of responsibility?

Is this from your playing in various bands? Do you wear ear plugs on stage?
Possibly? I didn't gig a ton, and I wore ear plugs at practice - which was 99% of my loud noises. But yea I was still exposes to loud noises from time to time.

2025 was an alright year for me.

The beginning of the year was good. My partner surprised me with a dream vacation to Hawaii, which I absolutely loved and had a great time on. I also had a great job with coworkers I could truly call friends and spend time with outside of work. I enjoyed the work itself as well my skills were improving as our team grew, and we did a lot of design work to support the guys in the field.

Around April, though, the company decided to cut back and eliminated our entire department, which was completely messed up.

It took a couple of months to find a new job. At my current company, I honestly don’t care for the way they operate. They feel stingy in many areas like computer equipment, software, and company policies and the owner seems to lack trust in employees. My manager is a micromanaging control freak, which I can’t stand. During the interview process, they talked about plans that aligned with my background and skills, including transitioning to Revit and moving away from AutoCAD. However, the manager is still using CAD and insists that I do the same. I’ve been proving him wrong by doing all my work in Revit and reminding him that I was hired to use specific programs and handle project coordination things we still haven’t actually implemented.

Luckily, when I came on board, one of my former coworkers was hired as well. We work well together, but even he’s fed up with the company. He recently found another job and has already put in his two weeks’ notice. I’ve been looking for a new job too, sending my resume to several places, but I haven’t had much luck so far.

That’s pretty much how 2025 went for me aside from losing some weight and paying off some debt.
