The original version of I Want Candy was not a top-ten hit. Sorry. It peaked at #11 in 1965. The record producers who had written the song also recorded it, calling themselves the Strangeloves. They also wrote My Boyfriend's Back and Hang On Sloopy.

Agreed. I think of how many songs that made the top 40 back then that I never heard and never get airplay today (unless it's the VJ 40). Or maybe heard once.

Then I think of songs I heard all the time and still hear that never made hit the top 40 like "I Want Candy", "What I Like About You", "Turn It On Again", "You Better Run", "Run Like Hell", "I Got You" (Split Enz), "Here Comes My Girl", "Tempted", "Tom Sawyer", "My Kinda Lover", "Shakin'" (Eddie Money), "Words" (Missing Persons), "No One Like You", "I Know What Boys Like" .....

Hell, we've got a rock station here in NH that plays "No One Like You" in heavy rotation - like a pop station does with a new Ed Sheeran song.

I agree. Classic-hits KRTH in Los Angeles plays I Melt With You three or four times a day, every day. Among the other non-top-40 hits that get played occasionally:

Blue Monday - New Order (--/1983)
Dancing With Myself - Billy Idol (--/1981, 102/1983)
Dead Man's Party - Oingo Boingo (--/1985)
Girls On Film - Duran Duran (--/1982)
It's The End Of The World As We Know It - R.E.M. (69/1988)
No Woman No Cry - Bob Marley & The Wailers (--/1975)
Rebel Yell - Billy Idol (46/1984)

I think the hard rock/heavy metal and new wave subculture pushed a lot of those songs to be popular, without being mainstream.

Growing up in Southern California, stations like KLOS and KROQ were popular, and played a lot of songs that would either never get played on the Top 40 channels, like KIIS.

One of the first videos I ever saw on MTV was the Bow Wow Wow version of "I Want Candy".

It was played in heavy rotation, too.

Is it WHEB or WGIR? I'm in the same area.

And I'd say "I Melt With You" is the #1 most played non top 40 song.

WGIR. People who grew up on 'Manch Vegas' radio probably think Scorpions and Night Ranger are as legendary as Led Zep and The Beatles.

But last I knew, WHEB is owned by the same company, and simulcasts at least the same morning show if not more, so Portsmouth probably has that same misconception.

Heard them last June in a VJ countdown but I must have blocked them out, because I would've sworn I'd never heard them. I may say this again next year too.

17. SONGBIRD – KENNY G

#61 Rock And Hyde "Dirty Water"

This is not a cover of the classic "I love that dirty water" song.

#68 Truth "Weapons Of Love"
#82 Frozen Ghost "Should I See"

Generic late 80s rock, but not bad. If I'd heard them back in '87, I woulda dug these ones.

#75 Peter Wolf "Can't Get Started"

Can't find a good quality audio of this one on YouTube. Did a little searching and found it here though: Box

#85 Dan Fogelberg "She Don't Look Back"

Pretty upbeat (for him). Kinda actually sorta rocks.

Will never make the top 40

#55 Lou Gramm "Ready Or Not"
#59 Cameo "Back And Forth"
#60 REO Speedwagon "Variety Tonight"
