I always find charts from this era interesting, because I was NOT listening to Top 40 radio at this time. Mostly cassettes in my car, & CD's/vinyl at home.

I generally like U2 just fine, but I never cared much for the stuff off "Rattle And Hum". Just didn't buy their attempt at American roots music.

Wasn't this one of those ones where it was an older song, & became a hit outta nowhere? And everybody was looking at each other like, "wha' happen'?" And then I came along & said "Payola happened, motherfuckers."

9: SURRENDER TO ME – ANN WILSON AND ROBIN ZANDER

Cheap Trick is one of my all-time top 5 bands. But I couldn't hum this if you put a gun to my head. And honestly, why would you do that? Ya friggin' weirdo.
7: WHAT I AM – EDIE BRICKELL AND THE NEW BOHEMIANS

I used to have a buddy who would sing "What I be, be what you not, put what you be away". And it would make me laugh.

Man...overall, seeing this list was a great reminder of why I wasn't listening to Top 40 radio at this time. A LOTTA junk in here.

She was talented and beautiful, but had many troubles in life. I remember the videos to "Living All Alone" and "Sacred Kind of Love" played on BET. I recently watched an "Unsung" episode on YouTube about her career too.

The song first peaked at #61 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1983. Due to the low performance of the song, Sheriff later disbanded. In 1988, Nationwide Communications (owner of several radio stations) began to add older songs from acts like UB40 (“Red Red Wine”), Benny Mardones (“Into The Night”), Sheriff (“When I’m With You”) and Synch (“Where Are You Now?”) into rotation, sending these past minor hits back onto the charts.

From a 1989 news article:

"Where Are You Now" is getting push from the radio station conglomerate that sparked revival of UB40's "Red Red Wine" and the Sheriff ballad. "When I'm With You." Years after the initial, relatively unsuccessful, release of both those songs, each has returned to the airwaves and topped the national charts. The credit is generally attributed to Nationwide Communications, a conglomerate of radio stations, which has pushed the older, forgotten songs. Last year, the group's Tuscon, Ariz., station, helped spark the rise of UB40's 1983 version of "Red Red Wine" to number one on the Billboard charts last year. This year, KLUC-FM in Las Vegas, another Nationwide station, began playing Sheriff's 1982 power ballad. The song topped out at number one on the Billboard charts this week. "I always thought it was a hit," said Jay Taylor, music director of KLUC-FM. Taylor feels that when the Sheriff song came out in 1982, there were many other "power ballads" and the song was lost in the shuffle. "I found it in my music collection I started playing it and I got a tremendous reaction." Taylor said he taped copies of the song, sent them to disk jockey friends. With so many stations adding the song to their play lists. Capitol Records subsequently re-released the single.

31. TURN UP THE RADIO - AUTOGRAPH

When drummer Keni Richards' friend, Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth, asked him to join him on the road to party on their 1984 tour, Richards said he couldn’t because his then-unnamed band was re-recording their demos for free with renowned producer & engineer Andy Johns (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones). The next day, Roth put Richards on the phone with Eddie Van Halen who offered his band an opening slot on the tour. It was soon after this the band chose the name Autograph.

Five months into Van Halen’s tour, the head of RCA Records saw Autograph at Madison Square Garden and signed them. Their debut album Sign In Please was released in October. Its lead single “Turn Up The Radio” – the last song written for it, and one RCA originally didn’t want included on the album – became a surprise pop crossover hit in early 1985.
