They did this exact same countdown last year.

My old notes:

80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

New notes:

Good 7
Ok 7
Bad 26

For whatever reason, La Bamba just gets on my nerves sooo much.

My wife's too. She said it makes her feel the way I do when "Feliz Navidad" comes on *shudder*

34. NEVER LET ME DOWN - DAVID BOWIE

I can't stand Bowie's music from '83-'87. This is no exception.

24. IT'S NOT OVER ('TIL IT'S OVER) - STARSHIP

I prefer the earlier Chris Thompson recording from the Playing For Keeps soundtrack, a cassette my friend used to play over and over and over. Pretty mediocre soundtrack in my opinion, and long forgotten nowadays. Can't find half of its songs anywhere on the internet.

21. ONE HEARTBEAT - SMOKEY ROBINSON

Oof, terrible. I respect his earlier work but this was just awful.

20. U GOT THE LOOK - PRINCE

I like a fair amount of Prince's music, but I despise all 4 singles from this album. However, one of the VJs said my musical idol Robert Smith once said it's one of the best albums of the 80s?! Hmph, now I may have to give it a full listen start to finish...

#99 INXS "Good Times (from Lost Boys)"

Wow forgot about this one. The same friend who listened to Playing For Keeps a thousand times used to play the Lost Boys soundtrack just as often. #shortfatfrannysgonnabetheretoo

Won't ever reach the top 40:
#45 38 Special "Back To Paradise (from Revenge Of The Nerds 2)"
#49 Pointer Sisters "Be There (from Beverly Hills Cop 2)"
#54 Yello "Oh Yeah (from Secret Of My Success/Ferris Bueller's Day Off)"
#67 Hooters "Johnny B"
#73 Great White "Rock Me"
#85 Def Leppard "Women"
#99 INXS "Good Times (from Lost Boys)"

Not surprised.

I'm a little surprised Yellow made it into the 50's.

The thing about that Yello song is I heard it in movies and tv commercials all the time, but not so much on the radio. So it makes sense to me that it made the hot 100 (sales) but not the top 40 (lack of airplay).

Onederland seems to think it is...

Channel Artist Title Date Time
303 Yello Oh Yeah (85) 9/12/2017 11:58:45 AM

But as I've said many times lately, I disagree with them on their definition of 'one hit wonder'.

I mean, they play A Flock Of Seagulls, Eddy Grant, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Outfield, A-ha, Katrina & The Waves and Men Without Hats. And none of them are one-hit wonders in my opinion.

We heard this exact same countdown last year.

Old notes:

80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

New notes:

Good 8
Okay 8
Bad 24

2. QUEEN OF HEARTS - JUICE NEWTON
Whatever Happened to Her? She disappeared after this top 2 single

She still hit #1 on the Country chart 3 more times in the 80s, but her pop-crossover success faded over the next few years.

81 "Queen of Hearts" #2
81 "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)" #7
82 "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me" #7
82 "Break It to Me Gently" #11
82 "Heart of the Night" #25
84 "Can't Wait All Night" #66

11. START ME UP - THE ROLLING STONES
Still remembered for Windows 95 and the Start Menu

And every time I hear it, I can only think of this parody...

dislike/hate with every fiber of my being/don't ever want to hear again

lol!

33. WE'RE IN THIS LOVE TOGETHER - AL JARREAU

I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but it's a fun one.

17. THE BREAKUP SONG - THE GREG KIHN BAND

They really don't write 'em like that anymore. You won't find anything slightly resembling good ol' rock 'n roll on the Hot 100 these days.

7. ARTHUR'S THEME (BEST THAT YOU CAN DO) - CHRISTOPHER CROSS

Watched this movie for the first time since the 80s just last month. Still holds up.

#85 Meat Loaf "I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us"

We won't ever hear him on a VJ40. He had no top 40's between '78 and '92.

#90 Billy & The Beaters "At This Moment"

...but it will go to #1 five and half years later thanks to Family Ties.

Songs that won't reach the Top 40
#43 Debbie Harry "Backfired"
#49 Squeeze "Tempted"
#54 Don Felder "Heavy Metal"
#66 Art Garfunkel "A Heart In New York"
#68 Devo "Working In The Coal Mine"
#85 Meat Loaf "I'm Gonna Love Her For Both Of Us"
#87 Dolly Parton "The House Of The Rising Sun"
#90 Billy & The Beaters "At This Moment"
#98 Jefferson Starship "Stranger"

We heard this exact same countdown last year.

Too many weeks in a row to be a co-incidence. Next week last year was 1985? It's also not like they are not re-recording them. Last year they had Martha.

Songs that won't reach the Top 40
#49 Squeeze "Tempted"
#68 Devo "Working In The Coal Mine"

Surprised at Squeeze. I thought Devo would have also grazed the top 40.
