Bad 19

Basically heard the same countdown two years ago. Only two songs were different. Old comments are here.

36. HOW CAN I FALL - BREATHE

Never occurred to me until just now, but musically - this song is kinda like a wussier "Purple Rain".

27. A NIGHTMARE ON MY STREET - DJ JAZZY JEFF & THE FRESH PRINCE

So Fresh Prince calls Jeff and tells him "Don't fall asleep". While Jeff's on the phone, Freddy gets him. Isn't he awake on the phone at that moment?

Or much more importantly, am I overanalyzing an obviously dumb song? Let's go with yes to both questions.

Either way, I still find the song entertaining and like to hear it once in a while.

25. KOKOMO - THE BEACH BOYS

The only tolerable Beach Boys song of the 80s.

Of course their worst song ever is probably the 1992 senior citizen rap crossover smash "Summer Of Love". And by "smash" I mean every copy should be found and smashed into oblivion.

20. WILD WILD WEST - ESCAPE CLUB

Borrowing heavily from Elvis Costello "Pump It Up".

10. PLEASE DON'T GO GIRL - NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

I was expecting to like more songs with a 1984 countdown but ouch, just ouch. I was even being kind with my 14 okay's.

Similar countdown last year at this time, in fact only two different songs. Old comments here

40. THE LAST TIME I MADE LOVE - JOYCE KENNEDY & JEFFREY OSBORNE
39. THE LUCKY ONE - LAURA BRANIGAN
37. SHINE SHINE - BARRY GIBB
33. WHAT ABOUT ME - KENNY ROGERS WITH KIM CARNES AND JAMES INGRAM
24. SWEPT AWAY - DIANA ROSS
21. THERE GOES MY BABY - DONNA SUMMER

Didn't know any of these back in the day. Fortunately.

30. I FEEL FOR YOU - CHAKA KHAN

Eminem 2009:
"Every minute there's a sucker born, snuck up on Malachi made the motherfucker suck on a shuck of corn. Shuck o', shuck o' corn, Chaka Khan."

22. BOP 'TIL YOU DROP - RICK SPRINGFIELD
10. SHE BOP - CYNDI LAUPER

So if "She Bop" is about masturbation, what exactly is Rick telling us to do?...

12. ON THE DARKSIDE - JOHN CAFFERTY & THE BEAVER BROWN BAND

giphy-facebook_s.jpg

5. LUCKY STAR - MADONNA

Who did it better? Weird Al or Madonna...

luckystar.jpg

3. DRIVE - THE CARS

A nice song but boring as hell. Every line starts with "Who's gonna...". Verses and chorus. How about "Who's gonna stay awake for this repetitive forgettable synthpop ballad?" Not me.

1. I JUST CALLED TO SAY I LOVE YOU - STEVIE WONDER

Heard the following week's countdown the last two years in a row. My 2017 comments and my 2016 comments on that one.

36. (YOU'RE MY ONE AND ONLY) TRUE LOVE - SEDUCTION

Wow. I never thought someone would actually try to mimic Milli Vanilli, but here it is.

32. SUNSHINE – DINO

tenor.gif

27. POISON - ALICE COOPER

His latest album has at least two good songs on it. "Paranoiac Personality" is good. And "The Sound Of A" was actually written 50 years ago for the Alice Cooper Band and finally just recorded last year.

22. (IT'S JUST) THE WAY THAT YOU LOVE ME - PAULA ABDUL

The radio remix is better than the LP version they aired.

17. HEAVEN - WARRANT
15. WHEN I SEE YOU SMILE - BAD ENGLISH

Wife was happy.

29. BLAME IT ON THE RAIN - MILLI VANILLI
20. DIDN'T I (BLOW YOUR MIND) - NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK
14. GIRL I'M GONNA MISS YOU - MILLI VANILLI
6. COVER GIRL - NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK

2. LOVE SONG - THE CURE

The band just got nominated for the RRHOF and is celebrating its 40th year, and all Goodman can talk about is how the song will never hit #1?

1. MISS YOU MUCH - JANET JACKSON

In 1990, I was dating a girl named "Misha" (yes, it's usually a male Russian name). So this song was "Misha Much". Because being cutesy works.

#98 Stage Dolls "Love Cries"

Still kinda like this song. But the b-side "Ammunition" is really good. Lyrically anyway. Powerful. It's about two kids having their dad taken away by the police in the middle of the night.

Won't make the top 40
#64 White Lion "Radar Love"
#75 Giant "I'm A Believer"
#76 Donny Osmond "Hold On"
#78 Alarm "Sold Me Down The River"
#82 Debbie Gibson "We Could Be Together"
#84 Icehouse "Touch The Fire"
#89 Winger "Hungry"
#93 Enuff Z'Nuff "New Thing"
#97 Cult "Edie (Ciao Baby)"
#98 Stage Dolls "Love Cries"
#99 Kon Kan "Puss N Boots/These Boots"

I heard this one quite a bit but by 1989 I was listening to rock radio not pop radio as pop pretty much had gone sucky (as evidenced by this countdown).
I find this to be an odd thought. By the time I was 10, I realized pop music was sucky, and stopped listening to pop radio. But it wasn't the music, it was me. Because pop music has always been the same - mostly sucky. Just look at the 1970 countdown. The 60s were even worse, with a huge rift between pop and rock.

I think this is why Sadchild never likes a majority of the songs, because they are pop countdowns.
