It's true. My cousin introduced me to rock in the early 80s and that became 90% of what I listened to.

I used to goof on pop acts while drawing hard rock band logos on my book covers.

I just went through the list of the top 50 rock songs that week:

Good 18
Okay 14
Bad 2

if that disco rock thread exists...

Kiss "I Was Made For Lovin' You"
Rolling Stones "Miss You"
Rod Stewart "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?"

speaking of that Kiss tune,

I hate playing that song to (this) day. Stadiums full of people jump up and down like biblical locusts — they go nuts — with tattoos and grills on… 'Ahhhh!' They're all jumping up and down, and I'm going, 'Do, do, do, do, do, do… Kill me now.' Still — still to this day I hate that song."

This isn't about the VJ40 but I needed a place to vent. So 80s on 8 just did one of those 'Lost Hits Of The 80s' auditory gems with Indiana Jones saying "Nobody's seen this in a thousand years". Usually they launch into some long forgotten song that was popular for a week or three, like Romantics "One In A Million", Opus "Live Is Life", Til Tuesday "Love In A Vacuum" or whatever. They actually played ONJ "Physical"...?! What?? It is and forever will be officially the biggest song of the entire decade. Numero uno!

from Billboard:
Newton-John’s all-time biggest hit on the Hot 100 is “Physical,” which spent a whopping 10 weeks at No. 1 on the tally in late 1981 and early 1982. It's not only her biggest hit, but also the No. 1 hit of the entire 1980s decade, scoring the most weeks atop the chart of any song that decade.

Has somebody lost their mind over on the 80s channel?

The only defense I can think of, is that it's a song that's rarely heard today, because it sounds so dated.

But more likely, it's just typical lazy radio. Like when they play a "deep cut" that's literally the biggest hit from an album. Or when the "latest" track from an artist is over a year old.

I have heard plenty of songs which were big in the day but not played that much today as a lost hit. I think they define it as a hit which they no longer play. Physical does qualify in that regard.

True, it's not heard a lot anymore.

I guess even still (if it were me) I wouldn't call the biggest song of the decade a lost hit on a channel that actually does play that song. Might as well call "Bette Davis Eyes" and "Ebony And Ivory" lost hits too? The only place I hear them these days is on the 80s channel.

Usually when they play those 'lost hits' segments, I say to myself "Wow I forgot this song existed!" or "I missed that one back in the day!". Like Don Johnson, Pure Prairie League or any song by Rick James not named "Super Freak", for example. You'd have to have been raised on the moon if you're 35+ and missed "Physical".

I don't think I have ever heard Physical outside of a big 40 countdown on the 80s channel. I think this is why they call it lost.

Maybe it didn't get much play in Canada. I heard it a LOT back in the day, and still hear it some today. It winds up in movies and TV. I don't listen to the 80s station very often, so I'm pretty sure I don't hear it there.

It was huge here too back in 1981/2. I have heard it get light play on FM here now (Usually on all 80s weekends). Nothing on the 80s channel. We have same satellite channels here. :)

I agree that not playing the biggest song of the decade on the 80s channel except for occasionally as a 'lost hit' and on the VJ40 is cartainly the epitome of 'lazy and effortless'.

Here's a solution. Maybe instead of calling it a lost hit, they could start a new segment called "Massive hits a station that calls itself 'an 80s station' is obliged to play, even if everyone's hated them for 25+ years".
