80s0n8 Big 40 Countdown Schedule

Good 15
Okay 4
Bad 21

My stream died during #5 so I didn't actually get to listen to the top 4.

39: SHOCK THE MONKEY – PETER GABRIEL

Love it but the end goes on forever, like "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic". Just end it already.

16: HEART ATTACK – OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN

My wife had one of those "don't think I've heard this since the 80s" moments.

7: DIRTY LAUNDRY – DON HENLEY

Another song that's good but won't friggin' end.

6: STEPPIN’ OUT – JOE JACKSON

One of my "Lobster songs".

For anyone who doesn't know the definition of a "Lobster song".

5: THE GIRL IS MINE – MICHAEL JACKSON & PAUL McCARTNEY

4: TRULY – LIONEL RICHIE

My friend's old room mate chose this. I'd forgotten about it. It was #1 last week.

1: MICKEY – TONI BASIL

My guess. And my friend's kid's guess. It was only #1 for a single week. #nailedit #feelingproud #feelinglikeabigmusicgeek

I'll do the "won't reach the top 40" later.

#41 Chilliwack "Whatcha Gonna Do"
#87 Judas Priest "You've Got Another Thing Comin'"
The Chiiiwack one surprises me. And to get stuck @ #41 has to suck.

The Judas Priest one does surprise me but doesn't. Hard rock doesn't do well on the pop charts usually.

Hard rock doesn't do well on the pop charts usually.
1988 - 1992 are the exception with lots of songs from bands like Metallica, Motley Crue, Aerosmith, Poison, Alice Cooper, Winger, Cinderella, Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Faith No More, Lita Ford, Def Leppard, Nirvana generally scattered across the Hot 100.

Have you seen the other "hits" posing as music in the same era?

Yep. That's why I'm grateful for the hard rock hits. If it weren't for them, the Hot 100 would be as shitty as it was this year!

Speaking of the Hot 100, half of the top 20 is already decades-old holiday songs again. In 10 years, the biggest "hits" of all time will all be old Christmas songs...

2018:
1. The Twist – 1960. Chubby Checker
2. Smooth – 1999. Santana
3. Mack the Knife – 1959. Bobby Darin

2028:
1. All I Want For Christmas Is You - Mariah (999 weeks in the top 40)
2. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee (998 weeks in the top 40)
3. A Holly Jolly Christmas - Burl Ives (997 weeks in the top 40)

#51 Motley Crue "Kickstart My Heart"

If I'd made my list of 333 fav songs of all ever ten years earlier, this would have been on it. It is on my 700+ expanded list though.

#57 Fiona/Kip Winger "Everything You Do (You're Sexing Me)"

Wow forgot about this forgettable collab. I think I heard it twice back in the day, and not since.

#64 Bonham "Wait For You"

Total Zep rip-off but his dad was in the band so I'll give him a pass. Fortunately it's a real good song, not like Greta Van Fuckingawful.

#66 Kiss "Hide Your Heart"

Great story-song!

#69 DJ Jazzy Jeff/Fresh Prince "I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson"

Still really enjoy this one.

One punch, that's all it took (oooh)
He hit me in my ribs and my insides shook
Now how can I say this and be a little discreet?
Let's just say that my bowels released

#73 Marcia Griffiths "Electric Boogie"

See "most hated songs" thread.

#74 Cure "Lullaby"
#84 Depeche Mode "Personal Jesus"

See "sadchild's 333 fav songs of all ever" thread

#76 Christopher Max "Serious Kinda Girl"

No wiki page, hardly a word about him on the internet!

#77 Chunky A "Owwww!"

This is Arsenio Hall. I know this because one of my high school friends liked this song (and probably still does). Sounds kinda like a parody of Cameo "Word Up".

#80 Safire "I Will Survive"

Terribly dated (and terrible) remake of the Gloria Gaynor hit.

Jive Bunny & The Mastermixers reached #11 on the Hot 100 in January 1990 with Swing The Mood, which sampled Glenn Miller's In The Mood, Chubby Checker's Let's Twist Again and seven 1950s rock'n'roll hits including Rock Around The Clock and Wake Up Little Susie. The recording also included three Elvis Presley songs sung by Elvis impersonator Pete Willcox. RCA refused to allow Presley's recordings to be sampled. Here is a video showing Willcox's many guest roles on television series and his stage show featuring impersonators of Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Tom Jones, Willie Nelson, Sammy Davis Jr. and many others:
