Adventures In Koopland

But don't go to the funeral before you know if the patient has died.

You guys are nice keeping hope alive but it's over. I dug out my employee handbook last night while I was doing all that stuff and it more or less said, "Koop you hid an arrest from your employer for 5 years, you're getting fired." I'm kinda making a joke there but it really does have a section about arrests and how you are required to report them right away. And it says nothing at all about doing a stint in county and taking vacation days as a way to avoid telling anyone at work where I was for 8.5 days. Once they find out about the arrest it's pretty easy to also find out about the sentence. I don't think that would be in a background check but who knows. The arrest will certainly be there though.

Do everything you can to NOT touch your retirement.

I'm well aware of how awful an idea that is. It's a last resort. If I stop wasting hundreds of dollars on stupid toys I can get by for a reasonable chunk of time in between jobs.

This is insane. Why would you not get an annual physical, which (by law) is 100% covered by insurance? How do you even get away with not having a PCP listed with your employer?

I've gone to gets shots every now and then. I'm sure I have a record somewhere in my place of the last guy I went to but it was just easier to search out a new one. I never go in for just a kick of the tires. If I don't have a specific purpose for being there I don't go. As far as work goes, they never ask so I never bring it up. Remember this is a job where I work security and managed to hide an arrest from them for 5 years so they are not exactly on top of everything.

There was an episode of Atlanta where a character smoked weed the night before her drug test. She goes to her boss and tells her about it. The boss laughs and explains they don't have the money to send the samples anywhere, so she would have been fine if she hadn't told her. But since she told her, the boss now has to report it and fire her.

Don't assume that a background check is a background check.

They may see the arrest, and not bother doing anything about it.
Employers use all kinds of clauses to give them more flexibility when they want to fire employees.
They will use one of the clauses to get rid of someone that they might have a hard time getting rid of for other reasons.

It's good that you're ready, but it might not be over just yet.

Dentist was fine but now I remembered another problem I need to tend to before my paychecks stop. A/C for the car. It's been out for like 4 months now. Since it was winter and I only drove like 6 miles a month before getting my license back it didn't really bother me. Now that it's summer and I can legally drive it's a big problem. Thing is, I got it fixed at Sears like 5 months ago and they told me it wasn't a leak. Clearly they were wrong because it stopped working again a month later and when I took it back they said they couldn't fix the problem. Every month I have to go to the Interlock device place for them to download the data and send it to the DMV. When I was there last month I saw a place right across the street that does A/C. The guys there seemed nice enough and their prices are the same as everywhere else so I've decided to kill 2 birds and I'll go to both places on Monday. I know this is going to be an expensive one.

I'm going to the dentist tomorrow and the doctor on Wednesday. As an adult I don't think I have ever gone to the doctor for a checkup so this will be a first. I just picked out a doc with the best reviews closest to me that my insurance covers. I'm pretty sure all he's going to say is, "You're fat, stop being fat. It's unhealthy. Also don't vape." Things I am well enough aware of already but I may as well get a visit in while I still can.

Along with making those appointments, I did some financial planning last night. With my savings I am good for a while if I wind up with zero income. If things get really bad and I wind up unemployed for an extended period, I can always cash out my retirement. I really don't want to do that because I'd take a sizable hit, but I've been paying into that thing for around 11 years now so even with the hit it would keep me going for a long time.

Also I'm not sure how unemployment works. I need to look into that. I think I can file for it if I get fired but I don't know. I'd like to stay away from that though cause it just feels icky. I don't need no government cheese.

I'm hoping in a couple of years when things finally settle down. I can start a good financial egg.

I have been unemployed many of times in Arizona and you can collect unemployment benefits in certain ways. Mainly if you were laid off, but if you got fired. You are basically screwed until you can find a job again.

I live in Arizona where you don't need A/C, it mainly a dry heat wave. :lostit:

Pre-unemployment step 2 today: get the a/c fixed. They say they can do it with the Interlock installed but I'm not so sure I believe them. We'll see. If they can work around it I will be content with anything under $650. The ballpark prices I got when calling around were anywhere from $200-$800 depending on the problem. I'm assuming it will turn out to be a big problem.

I have now been fingerprinted.

Doctor tomorrow and that's the end of my pre-firing checklist. After that it's just waiting to see what happens.

These intricacies will be much easier to focus on when I don't have pesky things like a mortgage or car or food to worry about.

I'm thinking tomorrow could be the day. Internet says 24 hours for background checks to come back so long as they aren't from the FBI. Around 2 pm today was 24 hours and they didn't get me yet.

If they bother taking any action, it may take management some time to get organized.
In your doomsday prep, have you put your resume together?

Besides this one job that I'm about to lose it's pretty pathetic. Also, it's been so long I had to Google "resume format". Ha! Google Docs has resume templates so I used one of those. Even when I get fired I can likely use a bunch of my coworkers as references so I should be able to mask the reason for the firing. They'd cover if an employer called. I may not mention that I got fired but I certainly am going to be honest about the criminal record right away. Don't need another repeat of this down the line.
