I watch a lot of HGTV; people talk about "price points".
I said this 5 years ago, and right now, it's driving me nuts. A "price point" is a maximum or baseline in a price range. But the dollar figure that a person is asking for their place is the price. It's not a price point. It's the same with a car, or any item at any store or online. The amount someone is selling something for is the price.

On all these home shows, the buyers are shown a property by the realtor, and then they say "so what's the price point?" And the realtor will say $349,000, or whatever. Annoying.

Another thing about HGTV shows ( well, "House Hunters International" at least - that's the only one we watch ) is when the buyers/renters are asked what their "price point" is, one says a firm number & the other almost always says "but we're willing to go higher if something ticks all our boxes".

Which may be true, but shut the fuck up. You don't have to say that out loud even if you're thinking it. You just literally gave away any leverage you had.

It reminds me of a time an idiot I used to work with was buying a record from a local record store. He mentioned how he knew there was a couple rare tracks on it, which made it more valuable. Just get the record at the cheap price you're getting it at & walk away. It was so important to him that he show the seller that he knew something that he almost fucked up the deal he was getting. Moron.

I consider "fridge" to be an annoying word. The Oxford English Dictionary says the word dates from 1926 and is a shortening of Frigidaire, a brand of refrifgerators launched in 1919. Saint Wikipedia acknowledges that "in the early to mid-1900s many Americans called any refrigerator a Frigidaire regardless of brand" but says "fridge" is "a contraction of 'refrigerator', a word in use since 1611."

This is an annoying word. But since it's out there, I might as well use it. Fuck the entire fediverse!

The fediverse (commonly abbreviated to fedi) is a collection of social networking services that can communicate with each other

HHI can be interesting, but often I find it to be sad for one reason or another. For one thing, there are people who are moving to Mexico, or Denmark, or Thailand, and they want a home that's exactly like something they'd get in suburban America. But the really sad ones are when a couple has school-aged kids, and they're ripping them away from all their friends and places they love, and sticking them into a foreign country where they don't know the language. And the parents think it'll be a "great experience" for the kids.

Today's Los Angeles Times includes this letter from Herb Schiff of Culver City, responding to a September 4 editorial:

"For those of us who, like Darren Rosenblum's mother, are jangled by the discordant 'they is,' how about a new word to make it clear? I suggest 'shay,' a word that combines 'he,' 'she' and 'they,' for a nonbinary individual person. Usage: 'Shay is coming to lunch. Set one extra plate.' So simple. No need for confusion opr embarrassment. Let's hear it for shay!"

I have a better idea: Combine "she" and "he" and "it" into "s/h/it."

Here is the editorial:

Nobody, with the possible exception of Herb Schiff of Culver City, will use "shay." And why didn't he spell it "shey"? A shay, according to Merrian-Webtser, is "a light, small-wheeled, horse-drawn carriage with a folding top."

I don't care.
I'll call someone whatever they want to be called.
Just don't get mad at me if I call you the wrong thing and expect me to be psychic and know before we meet.
