Are They A One-Hit Wonder?

You didn't learn the truth at seventeen?
That love was meant for beauty queens and high school girls with clear-skinned smiles who married young and then retired?

Icehouse
#7 "Electric Blue"
#14 "Crazy"

I had pretty much forgotten about "Electric Blue" until SXM. Not sure anyone under 40 knows "Crazy" unless they are 'crazy' about the eighties.

Two-hit wonder in the United States. Per Wikipedia: "Icehouse was inducted into the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) Hall of Fame on 16 August 2006.[8][9][10] ARIA described Icehouse as "one of the most successful Australian bands of the eighties and nineties... With an uncompromising approach to music production they created songs that ranged from pure pop escapism to edgy, lavish synthesised pieces..."[10] Icehouse has produced eight top-ten albums and twenty top-forty singles in Australia, multiple top-ten hits in Europe and North America and album sales of over 28-times platinum in Australasia alone.[10]"

Vanessa Carlton
#5 "A Thousand Miles"
#30 "Ordinary Day"

I know both songs well and still hear them. Not subjectively a OHW IMO

I'm not familiar with "Ordinary Day". And I think this is a first for me in this thread: she's subjectively a OHW.

Mindbenders
#1 "The Game Of Love"
#2 "A Groovy Kind Of Love"

No clue if they are subjectively a OHW, probably not? I wonder if a lot of people don't know Phil's "Groovy" is a cover. I didn't know until years later.

I was about to come in here and point out the "Mindbenders" were two different groups, but I made sure to do a fact check first. "Game of Love" is credited to Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders; "Groovy" is credited to the Mindbenders without Fontana. I was confused because The '60s Satellite Survey did a countdown of top OHW hits of the 1960s that includes "Groovy," with "Game of Love" included as an extra. The survey counts "Frank & Nancy Sinatra" as a OHW for "Something Stupid" (oh the irony!).

TL;DR: The Mindbenders are two-hit wonders if you ignore the credit of Wayne Fontana on "Game of Love."

Both songs are hits, commonly heard on Oldies radio.

I like the original way more than Collins version. Even when I was younger I suspected his version was a cover because "groovy" wasn't commonly said in 1988.

Collins recorded "Groovy" for his movie "Buster" which was set in the 1960s and choosen because it was a popular '60s song.

Tammy Wynette
#11 "Justified & Ancient" (with KLF)
#19 "Stand by Your Man"

And on the flipside....

KLF
#5 "3AM Eternal"
#11 "Justified & Ancient" (with Tammy Wynette)

I'm a big fan of their singles from this album/era. But I don't know if anybody else in the world still remembers either song aside from the programmers of 90s on 9 and Utopia.

It's a great album.

Arthur Conley's Sweet Soul Music, which he co-wrote with Sam Cooke and Otis Redding, was a #2 hit in May 1967 and has been played on oldies stations for decades. Does anyone remember Conley's Funky Street, which reached #14 in May 1968, or his remake of Big Joe Turner's Shake Rattle & Roll, which reached #31 in July 1967? Nope, I don't think so.

Tubes
#10 "She's A Beauty"
#35 "Don't Want To Wait Anymore"

For me, I only know their songs "Beauty" and "Talk To You Later" (#101). I'd never heard "Wait" before last summer on the VJ Big 40.
