Are They A One-Hit Wonder?

Why Can't I Touch You peaked at #9 on the August 5 1970 Boss 30 of KHJ in Los Angeles. (Bread's Make It With You was number one.) KHJ never played One Man Band. Dyson had eight top-40 hits and three top tens on the R&B chart. On the Hot 100, he's a one-hit wonder.

Polo G (Taurus Bartlett) has had hits with Lil Wayne, Lil Tjay, Neiked, Juice Wrld and The Kid Laroi – but as a solo artist, he's a one-hit wonder.

Rapstar, #1 in April 2021
Distraction, #39 in June 2022

I remember both songs. In Los Angeles, Make Me Yours was number one for two weeks on the Top 25 V.I.P. (Very Important Platters) survey of R&B station KGFJ in May 1967 – it couldn't get above Aretha Franklin's Respect – and was on the Fabulous Forty of top-40 KFWB for seven weeks, peaking at #26. KFWB never played Swann's remake of Jeannie Seely's 1966 #2 country hit Don't Touch Me. KGFJ played it but it failed to make their Top 25.

Michael Stanley
#33 "He Can't Love You"
#39 "My Town"

Michael Stanley was an American singer-songwriter, musician, and radio and television personality. As a solo artist and with the Michael Stanley Band (MSB), and Michael Stanley and the Resonators (MS&R), his brand of heartland rock was popular in Cleveland, Ohio, and around the American Midwest in the 1970s and 1980s.

Michel Stanley released three solo singles, 1972-74, and the Michael Stanley Band released 13 singles, 1978-85. Seven of those 13 made the Hot 100. The biggest was He Can't Love You, noteworthy for featuring Clarence Clemons on sax. Clemons played sax on more than 400 songs including Bruce Springsteen's Badlands, Born To Run and Thunder Road, Aretha Franklin's Freeway Of Love, Lady Gaga's The Edge Of Glory and Jackson Browne's You're A Friend Of Mine.

Julio Iglesias
#5 "To All The Girls I've Loved Before" (with Willie Nelson)
#19 "All Of You" (with Diana Ross)

Both LONG forgotten. I've only ever heard them on the VJ

Is Julio Iglesias a one-hit wonder? Here are the facts. You can draw your own conclusion. To All The Girls I've Loved Before reached #5 on the Hot 100, number one on the country chart and #3 on the adult contemporary chart. All Of You reached #19 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the adult contemporary chart. Iglesias had three other top-30 hits on the adult contemporary chart.

Iglesias had 19 top-40 hits, 11 top-ten hits and three number ones on the Hot Latin Songs chart, 1987-2003. He would have had more – he began recording in 1971 – but the weekly chart did not begin until September 6, 1986. Que No Se Rompa La Noche was number one for two weeks in November 1987, Lo Mejor De Tu Vida was number one for 13 weeks in June-July-August 1987 and Torero (with Jose Luis Rodriguez) was number one for two weeks in June 1992.

Unfortunately, I heard the first one on AM/FM radio back in the day. Never heard the second one.

Hal David wrote the lyrics of To All The Girls I've Loved Before and Albert Hammond, best known for the 1972 hit It Never Rains In Southern California, wrote the music. Here is Hammond's original version, from his 1975 album 99 Miles From L.A.

Marty Balin
#8 Hearts
#27 Atlanta Lady

He had plenty of hits as a member of Jefferson Star-plane. But only 2 top 40s as a solo artist. I just heard his second hit on the VJ and didn't recognize it. So as a solo artist I'd call him - subjectively - a one hit wonder.

Two new discoveries so far in the first half of this week's 1981 VJ

Carl Carlton
#6 "Everlasting Love"
#22 "She's a Bad Mama Jama"

I didn't know either song until the 2010s when I started listening to the VJ. Forgotten artist? Subjective zero hit wonder?

I know both songs. Everlasting Love, written by Buzz Cason and Mac Guyden, was a hit for Robert Knight in 1967, Carl Carlton in 1974, Rex Smith & Rachel Sweet in 1981 and Gloria Estefan in 1994. Estefan's version reached #5 on the adult contemporary chart. Everlasting Love is one of only two songs to be a top-40 hit in the 1960s, '70s, '80s and '90s. The other is The Way You Do The Things You Do (Temptations, Rita Coolidge, Hall & Oates with David Ruffin & Eddie Kendricks of the Temptations, and UB40).

She's A Bad Mama Jama – I'm still trying to figure out what a "mama jama" is – reached #2 on the R&B chart in August 1981. It was #2 for eight consecutive weeks, unable to get above Endless Love by Diana Ross & Lionel Richie and then the Four Tops' When She Was My Girl. Carlton had nine top-40 R&B hits including Smokin' Room, Private Property, Drop By My Place and a remake of the Four Tops' Baby I Need Your Loving.
