1975 - Hamlisch - can't argue with his success - one of only 16 to win the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony.
1976 - glad Morris Albert didn't win for Feelings lol.
1977 - Winner is a one hit wonder. Wild Cherry also.
1978 - Debby - one big pop hit, then drifted to Country and Christian music.
1979 - Solid group of artists. The Cars or Costello would have been better, Toto is good also.

1980 - seems strange to see Dire Straits in 1980, when they formed in 1977, released the first album in 1978. I guess the success of Sultans hit in 1979, triggering the nomination in 1980? ... and yes, that's legendary comedian Robin Williams also nominated.
1981 - Christopher Cross won just about everything that year.
1982 - Sheena did have a good string of hits in the 80's
1983 - Human League - seems like a lag there too, would have expected them the year before for a nom.
1984 - Big Country - I really like "In a Big Country", but that's the only song from them that I know.

I have taken the liberty of crossing out the ones which in hindsight were not deserving mainly because they were flash in the pans (not wanting to use term OHW). I have then marked the ones that I think should have won given hindsight with <-------.

The list of nominees in this category proves how bizarre these awards are. In hindsight, certainly Dire Straits would've been the right pick, but Rickie Lee Jones was no flash in the pan. Aside from the sappy, poppy Chuck E's in Love, her debut album showed she had real talent. Here's another great tune from that album

Ricki Lee Jones – Danny’s All-Star Joint (live)

And way out in '89, I bought her album Flying Cowboys, which was a bit of a resurgence for her. Besides, without RLJ (and her interview with LeVar Burton), we'd never have this song

The Orb Ft. Ricki Lee Jones – Little Fluffy Clouds

I love Little Fluffy Clowns.

Such a great groove.

Quite a few artists whose success was short-lived in these years. In all 5 years, I agree with the choice of winner.
I'm curious how the Judds got nominated (no knock on them) when it doesn't look like any other country artists got nominated prior to 1990.

Girl you know it's...Girl You know it's...Girl You know It's....Girl You know it's......

You figure Milli Vanilli were the biggest selling, but as far as overall staying power, the Indigo Girls take this one.

1991:
Mariah Carey (winner)
The Black Crowes
The Kentucky Headhunters
Lisa Stansfield
Wilson Phillips

Her music really isn't my style, I did like 'Vision of Love' growing up, but I can't really argue with this one, although The Black Crowes would have been my choice.

1992:
Marc Cohn (winner)
Boyz II Men
C+C Music Factory
Color Me Badd
Seal
Despite the fact I really like the song, Marc Cohn was a one-hit wonder. Boys II Men or Seal would've been my choice.

1993:
Arrested Development (winner)
Billy Ray Cyrus
Sophie B. Hawkins
Kris Kross
Jon Secada

No argument here!

1994:
Toni Braxton (winner)
Belly
Blind Melon
Digable Planets
SWV
I'll take a mulligan on this one since none of these really do anything for me.

I've never heard of the Kentucky Headhunters.

Most of those years were pretty thin for bands with staying power.
Country band. We're played on Mainstream Country stations a lot during those years.

Listen to Prime Country on Sirius you'd probably hear one or two songs.

These guys...

Totally agreed.

I'm surprised to see Belly nominated. "Feed The Tree" is a great song -- but it barely made the Hot 100. And no other memorable songs, as far as I know.

Gepetto was big on the radio. Plus Slow Dog and Dusted got airplay. They all came from the same album, so the band got a fair amount of airplay at one time.
