For my last move, all I could come up with were moves that would tie us. Which means I would lose (because I couldn't use all my letters). It took me EIGHT DAYS to come up with a move that I thought MIGHT push me over the edge. I can't believe I actually pulled it off!

Eight days, that's dedication. I could've gotten more points by playing 2 of my 3 remaining letters in certain places. But it wouldn't have put me ahead, and it would give you the last move.

I wound up going with a brand new 2024 Hyundai Venue SEL. It's a cute little subcompact SUV. And I paid for it outright so no payments which is really nice. I've never had a new car before. The title says it had 16 miles on it and I probably put 4 of those on it during my test drive. It was almost exactly 25 grand. I'm very happy with it. I'll post pics and talk more about the buying experience later.

Congrats!
I hate buying cars, but am going to have to do it in the not too distant future.

Be careful when you get it!
I was driving home from work on Monday and was behind a brand new Ram pickup truck. It still had the temporary tags on it.
I was in the far left lane, it was raining, and there was a decent amount of traffic. I smelled weed coming from some car in front of me.
All the sudden the pickup either hydroplaned, swerved, or something, but it nose-dived right into the concrete dividing wall, spun around, hit the wall again, and spun again so it was facing forward again. There was a semi in the lane to my right, so I couldn't swerve to get out of the way. I hit the brakes as well as I could without risking losing traction, and hoped for the best. I couldn't decide if I should hold the center of my lane, aim for the gap between him and the wall, or try to squeeze to the right as far as I could and hope he didn't bounce off the wall again.

I decided to aim for the middle. He never came to a full stop, so I was able to slow down enough to avoid hitting him. There was enough of a break in the traffic that I could get around him, but his new truck was MESSED UP! The guy never seemed to pull over.

Wow. Glad you made it out unscathed.

And yea before I left the showroom I called Progressive and added comprehensive and liability to my policy. Kinda gotta have it with a new car...not really needed with a 2005 RAV.

Pam told me a little while ago, and she's right, that I'm going to wind up getting pulled over for DUI while I'm sober.

I know all this stuff is probably normal to you guys but before this month the newest car I ever had was my 2005 RAV.

Anyway the Venue has that lane assist thing. So when I veer out of my lane it autocorrects and pulls me back into the lane. I love this thing and can't get enough to of it. So what I've been doing a bit too much is just taking my hands off the wheel to wait and see how far I drift before the car pulls me back. It's a lot of fun and I basically do it every time I drive now, hahah.

Also I'm not used to not turning a key to start and turn off the engine. It's nice not having to ever take the keys out of my pocket but I'm still not used to it. Almost every time I park I reach at the steering column to take out the non-existent key. I wonder how long I'll do that before the key less thing becomes second nature.

Careful about the lane assist. If the lines of the road are obscured by snow or dust it can sometimes not identify the lane. Also if you drop below 50 kph (30 mph) it stops working. Just because your car is idiot proof does not mean you need to drive like an idiot.

The no key thing is nice too. It will be hard if you have to drive a car with a key in the future though.

So did you get pulled over?
And does DUI = Driving Unfortunately Idiotically?

I‘ve rented cars with lane assist, and I don’t like it. It’s like driving in a wind storm. The damned thing keeps pulling at the wheel. I know where I am car… SHUT UP AND MIND YOUR BUSINESS!

You type faster than me and stole my line!
At least we’re consistent.

The push to start is kinda fun, but the door lock by proximity is pretty weird.

Mrs. Scotch had the 2020 Subaru Outback (which she hated) that had the lane warning/assist. For a while, the Mrs. appreciated it, because sometimes it would kick-in at useful times. Same thing with the adaptive cruise control. I'm like, wow, it brakes for tolls and everything. But we ended up disabling both.

There were just too many times that the warning would pick-up on lines (like entering a highway) and annoy us, and the pulling at the wheel was disconcerting. And the thing about the adaptive cruise is that it slows you down if the car in-front slows down. So you set it for 75, and eventually you're doing 63 before you notice. Without adaptive cruise, I'd realize that I'm coming up on a slow car and I'd change lanes. I might have to shut off the cruise for a second, but I'd still maintain most of my speed.

The keyless thing is mostly good, especially if you're a solo driver. But when Mrs. Scotch wants me to drop her off at some place, while I head to another store, she takes her purse - which has the key in it. I can't recall the number of times I've sat in the car, disabled, in front of a store, or even on a city road.

But the 2 greatest technologies are: #1 the back-up camera, and #2 the blind-spot warning light in the side mirrors. My car has neither, so when I go from the wife's car to mine, I miss those.

I should mention that one of the reasons the Mrs. hated the Subaru was all the fucking beeping. The adaptive cruise would beep when you set it, then beep whenever a car ahead was in range, then beep when the car went out of range, and beep when you changed lanes (because there'd be a different car ahead) or if a car entered your lane, and beep when you disengaged it. Now her Volvo also has adaptive cruise, but it works better, and there's no beeping.

I thought of another great feature: #3 is auto wipers (rain-sensing). I've had them for decades, and it sucks to be in a car without them.

My car has the ability to turn off the lane assist and also adjust it's sensitivity. I have mine set on to medium setting. It will usually beep before trying to correct. Gives me time to hold the wheel if not desired. If you turn it off you suffer the indignity of a warning light. It is also disabled if the turn signal is on. Might be time to be one of the old geeks who drives for 200 miles signalling left.
