I'm pretty sure these songs were still being played after 1971. In fact, there's an entire channel devoted to it.
The older the countdown, the more likely I don't recognize many of the songs by name. A lot of the songs from about 1975ish and earlier feels like "old people music" to me, just because of when I was born.

Actually, I don't recognize songs from the newer the countdowns, like 2003ish and later, too. Because pop music went to shit shortly before that (IMO)

I get all that. My comment is aimed more at the older crowd, like IRBS, who did not include the Carole King song (which you did), among other enduring tunes.

The Carol King song does nothing for me. I would not feel the absolute need to change the channel if it came on but if I was near the dial I may see what else was on. If not, I would tolerate it until the next song. That does not match my definition for ok which is able to listen to it and enjoy it but not have the need to listen to it more (the good category). A vast majority of the early 70s countdowns is I have no idea what the song actually is so I am unable to comment either way. I just do not include it as I cannot classify it as good or ok. I did not listen to any radio in 1971 as I have previously discussed.

Yes, and for the most part, neither did I. But I also wasn't around when they originally aired I Love Lucy, yet I've seen most episodes. So it has nothing to do with listening to radio in 1971.

Carole King's Tapestry is 14x Platinum, so it's not a stretch to assume you're familiar with it. Apparently, you are, and are not a fan. OK then.

IRBS, you didn't listen to the radio in 1971? Wow! So you missed such lovely, beautiful, heartfelt, enduring classics as Yo-Yo by the Osmonds, Sweet & Innocent by Donny Osmond, Hot Pants by James Brown, Funky Rubber Band by Popcorn Wylie, The Sheriff Of Boone County by Kenny Price, Flim Flam Man by Barbra Streisand, Mammy Blue by the Pop Tops, Pushbike Song by the Mixtures, Treat Me Like A Good Piece Of Candy by Dusk and Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep by Mac & Katy Kissoon.

The song that was number one on the August 25 1973 Billboard Hot 100 was also number one on that week's Cash Box Top 100. I will not be a spoiler – but here are the other number ones for that week:

Pop Albums: Chicago VI – Chicago
Easy Listening: Say Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose – Tony Orlando & Dawn
Country: Everybody's Had The Blues – Merle Haggard
Country Albums: Satin Sheets – Jeanne Pruett
R&B: Let's Get It On – Marvin Gaye
R&B Albums: Touch Me In The Morning – Diana Ross
Jazz Albums: Birds Of Fire – Mahavishnu Orchestra
UK Singles: Young Love/A Million To One – Donny Osmond

The Donny Osmond songs were remakes of, respectively, a 1957 Sonny James hit and a 1960 Jimmy Charles hit. Beginning with the April 7 1979 chart, the Easy Listening chart was renamed Adult Contemporary.
