I had this idea for 2 reasons. I of course have been thinking about Norm a lot and I'll post about that later but right now I'm on a Bo Burnham tear. I think he may be a straight up Mensa type genius that uses his talent for comedy. Like if he wanted to do science or something we would still know his name. He's been doing it and really killing it since he was like 14. Let that sink in. He made high level, adult comedy as pretty much a preteen.

His recent Netflix Covid special is amazing but right now I want to talk abt older ones. He has transcended that old trope that prop or musical comedy is a crutch. His shows are so freaking well thought out it's amazing!

It's super cool he was accepted by the legends somewhat early on. That tune is AMAZING. And it's so cool he hit the scene and blew up in time to share a stage with Garry Shandling. Another amazing comedian we should talk about in this thread.

Let's not forget he kinda killed it writing and directing his debut movie Eight Grade. It's abt a middle school girl navigating life and I liked it (maybe not a 99% like how it currently sits on Rotten Tomatoes) and would call it a solid 4/5. IT WAS HIS FIRST OUTING IN MOVIES!

And before the Covid special, "Inside" he was still killin it as an adult and evolving from his somewhat shock style of comedy.

In these 2 videos he completely tackles both the modern county genre and the superstar hip hop game:

The Internet: "Apathy's a tragedy and boredom is a crime."

That's just 1 line from his "Inside" special. That completely sums up the current internet imo.

I can't help but talk about Inside.

My two favorite modern comedy specials are:

Richard Jeni - A Big Steaming Pile Of Me [2005]

Kathleen Madigan - Bothering Jesus [2016]

Links are for the playlists of the complete shows (audio only)

I loved Richard Jeni. This was (IMO) by far his funniest routine. Ironically, he died by suicide

I recognize the bit immediately just seeing the title. Yes, irony. But definitely funny.

With my wife, I always quote lines from his bit "Women came from a drying planet. They need moisture."

My favorite is his bit on politics. He not only insults the left and right really well, but he's DEAD ON ... AND he fires shots at people who are in the middle.

Richard Wright, one of my favorite comedians, made his television debut on The Tonight Show in 1982. "I think you're gonna find him a little different," said Johnny Carson. Yep. That's why I like him.

Yes, one of my favorites (I think I mentioned elsewhere). But it's Steven Wright, not Richard. Should be an easy name for you to remember.

One of my favorites from Steven Wright:

I got pulled over the other day, officer says "do you know you were going 98 miles an hour?". I said I wasn't planning on being out that long.

Here is Drew Carey's first appearance on The Tonight Show in 1991. And he's right – he does look the guy in those old comic-book ads for X-Ray Specs!

I've been watching a bunch of those old Carson segments lately. I watched Eddie Murphy a couple days ago.

Steven Wright is awesome. I wish he had more than 2 albums.

"I'm going to get an MRI to find out whether I have claustrophobia"

And Robin Williams was one of a kind, a genius.

George Carlin went from kinda funny, to really funny, to brutally offensive but still usually funny.
