Somewhere on these forums, we were talking about songs you know being used in commercials. I've been seeing this Chevy truck commercial, and they use the bass line from a song that sounded so familiar to me.

I was even able to hum the song past the point of the clip, but I couldn't figure out how I knew it. Then it hit me that it might be something by Sudan Archives, from their newer album (I have an older one). I went on reddit and confirmed it.

Am I looking at this the wrong way, or is this ad very flawed?

In the 2nd part of the commercial, a woman's baby tries to grab a shiny, colorful Tide pod that the mother had taken out of the "child-safe" container, and left on top of the laundry, within reach of the kid. The mother expresses a brief moment of horror, before she snatches the pod away, and locks it in that brilliantly designed container. Except that the container doesn't do shit if you take the pod out of the container, and leave it unattended, within reach of your kid. That's the real message being driven home.

It's like having a gun safe, but then leaving a loaded gun out. No amount of packaging or barriers can fix stupid. And the Tide ad shows a stupid mom, who never should've left the pod sitting out for the kid to grab. So is that the intended message of the ad?

Tide: We've developed child-safe packaging, but you'll probably still poison your kid anyway.

This is an ad that pops up on my phone when I'm playing online games.

Apparently, the legal department decided that the "Hey kids..." message and the "Ask your parents..." thing absolves them of any responsibility.

For your amazement and amusement, here is a 1965 McDonald's commercial featuring children with phony names – but, golly gee, they said their lines so well!

WTF????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

None of you told me about this?

Pam told me about it this morning and then my Aunt Kath told me about it tonight.

I have a weirdo European name that's spelled wrong in our great nation. I never get to hear my name the way I spell it pronounced correctly in any sort of pop culture or whatever.

I dig these you're becoming your parents ads and now they call me out!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????????? They are now my favorite ads ever!

"We got a latte for Jan....J.A.N.....Jan as in January"
"Could be Yon, I guess, Yon" hahahahaha.

I love those commercials. I've seen that one a couple of times, but I never noticed the name he was calling out. That's funny.

BTW, the other day I was thinking about Jan Michael Vincent, and wondering if his name was actually pronounced like yours, but he just made it simple for acting.

I go back to the beginning with Jan Hammer. I have records of him from the early 70s (that my brother bought), both solo and with Mahavishnu orchestra. I always heard it pronounced "Yon". But you're correct that he's another Jan, and created the theme for that show.

Interesting. I know about Don Johnson. That's about the extent of my Miami vice knowledge and he used to wear white suits right? So there was some guy named Jan AKA Yon who sang songs about it?

And yeah the easiest way to spell my name in English is Yon but half the time when I do that people think I'm Asian if I'm just like on the phone or whatever.

Also, I'm pretty sure the guy who is in charge of Rolling Stone Magazine is another Jan AKA Yon. But I don't know how he spells it.

Also check this out if I have to have a weird name, which by the way I'm a huge fan of the tradition. How I have a million grandfathers before me named Jan and they have a million grandfathers before them named Hendrik. It's a cool tradition...... But that doesn't change the fact that in America I have a girl's name.

Anyway, check this out...

So If I have to be the Jan version of John, I think I at least got the best country. Scandinavian countries.....That's where Vikings came from so that's cool. But they're also kind of uncivilized savages so gross.

Czech is basically Russian and that equals commies and that's super gross.

Sweden didn't even put up a fight against the Germans. They said hey Germans come travel through our country to go do whatever atrocity you're going to do somewhere else..... And while you're here, we're happy to supply you with our natural resources to help further your axis powers agenda.

At least the Dutch tried to put up a fight. It was kind of sad though. It literally took 5 days for them to get conquered but whatever they tried, that's the important part.

Also, Dutch people have been fighting the ocean for the entirety of their existence and they've been winning, so that's pretty cool.

There have been many famous men named Jan – but the majority, as Koop implied, were born outside the United States. Among them are actor Jan-Michael Vincent, Dutch actor Jan van Dommelen, Belgian actor Jan Decleir, Swedish actor/singer Jan Malmsjö, Flemish painter Jan van Eyck, former Chiefs/Vikings/Packers placekicker Jan Stenerud (born in Norway), German Olympic champion figure skater Jan Hoffmann, German Olympic champion bicycle racer Jan Ullrich, actor/comedian/game show host Jan Murray (real name: Murray Janofsky), Germs co-founder Jan Paul Beahm (who called himself Darby Crash) and singer Jan Berry, half of the duo Jan & Dean, best known for Surf City, Drag City, Honolulu Lulu, Dead Man's Curve and The Little Old Lady From Pasadena.

Jan van Eyck,

It's good to know my name could have been worse.

Girl name Van Gross

I read that as Yon Van Ick. Hahah.

I'm not 100% sure this is true but according to my dad you can spot a Dutchman if they have a Van and a German if they have a Von in their name.
