Concerts you have attended?

When we entered the Rogers Centre we got little wristbands with a flat square on it. Completely forgot about it until Imagine Dragons came on. When they sang their first song, the thing lit up. The square put out various colours and patterns. It made an interesting effect across the crowd. And each was independently controlled. You had twinkling effects, and "wave" effects. I am really curious about the technology because it was very interesting and cool. At the end they turned all the units on so going home you could see whomever was at the concert. It's still flashing now on my desk.
My wristband finally went dead late last night.

  • Bill Burr [08/24 Toronto, ON] (comedian)
I posted before about the cellphone policy. It was not in the original ticket confirmation but was mentioned in the subsequent ticketmaster updates. I think they were pretty slimy for not being upfront until after they had my money. But in an effort not to make life difficult for my son I complied. I didn't bother wearing my Apple Watch because they were also banned. I was amazed at how much I have become addicted to having a watch on my wrist and one with other stuff. But at least I still had my phone until we got to the event. We did dinner @ The Spagetti Factory prior to the show.

We arrived at Scotiabank Arena (a place I still call the ACC Or Air Canada Centre -- the name it had before Scotiabank bought the naming rights -- when they made the change it all happened overnight the first night. When they pay their $ they want the bang immediately). We got there about 7:25PM and at that time there was a small line. A lady came through the line and looked at the ticket on your phone and then wrote it on a slip of paper (very high tech). They then scanned the phone to validate the ticket. Then they took the phone and put it in a bag. I turned it to airplane mode and powered it off prior to surrendering. Then they we went through security. Then to our seats. And we sat there. They elected not to provide any clock. At one point I went to the seater and asked her for the time. That was at 7:55PM. At 8:10PM a guy came and sat next to me. He had an old fashioned watch. He also said their was a huge line to get through the slower entry process.

The opening act started about 8:30PM (1/2 hour late). She was a Toronto comedian. She was horrible. The best thing about her set was it was only 15 minutes long. She spent the whole time joking (I assume) about her female body parts and calling guys idiots. Then they played the promo for Bill Burr's upcoming movie ("Old Dads"). Then BIll Burr came on. He was good and I enjoyed him. Not very politically correct but very funny. We never got a chance to get a drink as we were going to do that in the break between the opener and him. There was no break. He did no encore. I laughed but stayed true to my word and did not applaud or cheer. He never made any jokes about cellphones so I did not have to boo.

Leaving the show was a disaster. 15,000 people and only 2 phone unlockers it seemed (there were probably other exits but we were funneled into this one. A lot of other exits closed).

My son wants to see the movie. But I also said I would not give him any more money. Conundrums.

I was looking at shows we saw advertised at the arena last night. There were 3 that caught our interests (at least one of us):
  • The Killers
  • The Who
  • Bryan Adams
The Killers was sold out. The baseline ticketmaster price for their cheapest seat was $121 and Verified Resale was the only thing available @ $256/seat. We passed. The Who tickets were $85/seat. We almost grabbed them but I remember hearing reviews that Pete was almost illegible with his mumbling. Bryan Adams tickets were only $35/ticket ($15 of that is fees). So my son and I have added him to our schedule.

So this show was tonight (technically last night). We (my son and I) again did dinner at the Spaghetti Factory prior to the show. It was enjoyable. We had to drive since the GO train people altered their schedule without updating their schedule so we saw the train pulling away when we got to the parking lot. After dinner we wandered over to the Scotiabank Arena. We are about 40 minutes before 8PM (the posted showtime). We got in the t-shirt line and bought t-shirts. We got to our seat and were chatting when @ 7:50 they start the show. The backup band did a very sort show (20 minutes). His or the band's name was Peter McPoland. He was not horrible on his own music but he did a remake of "Twist and Shout' that did not make you want to twist or shout.

21 Pilots started about 8:45PM. During the delay various people were doing pattern dances with their cellphones and their lights. Then we had a wave go around for about 10 spins. Then finally the band came on. They had a video of them in the artic (the tour was "The Icy Tour") and then they went through a blue door that was over top of them. Then they came out of a big blue door on the stage with a whole bunch of dry ice effects. It was not as cool as Imagine Dragons. The tried to create similar effects with both people using their cellphones but it wasn't as good.

Overall I enjoyed the concert. So did my son, I am more familiar with their music than Imagine Dragons so I enjoyed it more in that way. But the Imagine Dragons had this one beat overall. But still a good concert.

Tomorrow is a day off.

I've got tickets to a couple shows coming up...fingers crossed things stay quiet-ish on the Covid front for awhile.

Cheap Trick in about 2 weeks at the theater just down the street from me, & in November The Smithereens w/Marshall Crenshaw on guest vocals.

I think Cheap Trick still puts on a fun show.
I heard that the Smithereens were out gigging and wondered about the vocals.
Have fun!

Cheap Trick is one band I won't see. It goes back to 1980ish when they did a show in Regina. I had some friends that were there. And they finished their set and left the stage. People did their usual clamouring for an encore. One of the band members came back and said their would be no encore. They didn't want to have been playing "in this shithole" to start with and they were done. Some of the other concert goers were saying they were going to "have words" with the band at the back. I don't think they did as I suspect security was tight and it would have made the local shithole news.

I saw them around 84 or 85. They sounded great, and played all of the hits. I don’t remember if they did encores or not, but some bands don’t. I remember one band I saw in the 90 that said, “Hey! We’re going to play straight through and play everything. We’re having fun and not going to make you work for the last few songs.” As long as they play the good stuff, I don’t need an encore.

I don't think the lack of encore was the issue. I have been to several concerts without encores (which I have already stated my opinion on). At the time encores were customary but even so their ill-advised speech was the primary issue.

Supersuckers used to do a bit where instead of leaving the stage, they did what they called "The Fake Encore". At the end of the regular set, they all turned their backs to the crowd. And everyone would do the usual cheering, & after a couple minutes they'd turn back around & act like they just came back up. Always amusing.

On most of the shows recently, it's been Marshall Crenshaw on vocals. Sometimes it's the guy from Gin Blossoms, Robin Wilson. I'd say it's about a 65/35 MC/RW split. They're actually releasing a "new" album next month called "The Lost Album". They recorded it in 1993-ish when they were between labels.

the name it had before Scotiabank bought the naming rights
I effing HATE this. "Hey let's go rock out to Pat Benatar and Lita Ford at the Fidelity Investments Arena". Barfo.

I will say I liked it (aka 'not as bad') when TD bought naming rights to the Boston Garden they at least put the word "Garden" back into it as "TD Garden" instead of the "Fleet (Bank) Center".
Cheap Trick in about 2 weeks
May this not happen to you

Well, my Cheap Trick concert is in a ooooooooold theater ( http://uptowntheater.com/about/ ) that holds a couple thousand. So if that does happen, you guys can split up my record collection.
