4. Same Love (Macklemore & Ryan Lewis song) (with Mary Lambert)
I like this one.

But my fav songs from him are:

"Drug Dealer" (about big pharma)

My drug dealer was a doctor, doctor
Had the plug from Big Pharma, Pharma
I think he trying to kill me, kill me
He tried to kill me for a dollar, dollar

"Kevin" (about losing a friend ... thanks to big pharma)

Look at Kevin, look at Kevin, now he's wrapped in plastic
First dealer was his mom's medicine cabinet
Got anxiety, better go and give him a Xanax
Focus, give him Adderall, sleep, give him Ambien
'Til he's walking 'round the city looking like a mannequin
Ups and downs shifted by prescriptions you're handin' him

With the wrist dongles going off after the concert, my son and I were discussing cool way other concerts have ended. I regaled him with the story of a U2 concert in 1987 where the concert goers kept singing a song as they left. Then he asked me which song. And of course I could not remember. I looked through my U2 library and nothing looked familiar. Then for a lark I went to the setlist site I use and typed in "u2 1987". Low and behold, there was the setlist for the exact concert I was at. 1987/10/03. A date before the invention of the internet (or at least widespread use). Here is the setlist:

1. Where the Streets Have No Name
2. I Will Follow
3. Trip Through Your Wires
4. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (with 'Exodus' snippet)
5. MLK
6. The Unforgettable Fire
7. Exit (with 'Riders on the Storm' / Van Morrison's 'Gloria' snippets)
8. In God's Country
9. Sunday Bloody Sunday (with 'Rain' snippet)
10. Help! (The Beatles cover)
11. People Get Ready (The Impressions cover)
12. Bad (with Lou Reed's 'Walk on the Wild Side' snippet)
13. October
14. New Year's Day
15. Pride (In the Name of Love)
Encore:
16. Bullet the Blue Sky
17. Running to Stand Still
18. With or Without You (with 'Shine Like Stars' snippet)
19. 40

The song was "40".

2. I Will Follow
...
18. With or Without You (with 'Shine Like Stars' snippet)
19. 40
Surprised to see "Follow" so early in the set. Seems like a set closer. When I saw Cure, they closed with their earliest stuff.

Encore 3:
25. Lovesong

26. Boys Don't Cry
27. 10:15 Saturday Night
28. Killing an Arab

Surprised to see "Without" in the encore, not the main set (some people may have initially been upset, thinking the show was over without playing this huge hit - it had just gone to #1 a couple months before this show)

I may be pushing Scotch even closer to an early grave by admitting this (I seem to shock him again and again with the stuff I've never heard) but I just listened to "40" and I swear I've never heard it before. Of all the hours upon hours upon hours of U2 I've heard (both willingly and unwillingly) over the course of my life, that song is brand new to me.

The only time I think I have heard "40" (aside from listening to the album) is at the concert.

Most people expect an encore. The whole encore thing is really such a scam.

I like the idea of a 'one more song' encore if the audience screams for it. My band has gotten the "one more song!" chant, and then we have to check with the stage manager (or headliner for smaller shows) and get approval. That's an encore.

But it's turned into the silliness like you see in my post above, where The Cure did 3 "encores". No... they did a long set, took a break, did a short set, took a break, did another short set, then they did 4-song "encore".

Any concert which has encores here is how it works. Band leaves stage. House lights remain down. People scream and cheer. Band comes out plays 1-4 songs. Then either repeat above or the house lights come on sometimes before the band has even fully leaving the stage. Looking at setlists the encores are always the same. And it is all pre-arrranged with the venue. There is no such thing as a real encore.

Rest easy, I've never heard it either. In fact, I've never heard of it. I have probably 6 U2 albums, but I don't own War.

A lot of things upset you, don't they? Yes, we've all realized that encores are planned. It's become part of the live concert experience. It allows the band to have a short break, get something to drink, and take a piss. And then the audience can anticipate a few interesting end-of-the-night songs, as well as the big hit. Just accept it and enjoy.

Who said I was upset? I just think its a scam.

There are a lot of other piss breaks and stuff in the show. The drum or guitar solo or the accustic guitar song with just one band member. It's never a 2 hour straight marathon. But I can accept it as another break. I don't bother doing the sceaming and cheering as I know they are going to come back out anyways.

Interesting bit from Songfacts.com (I wonder if it's true)

U2 closed most of their concerts in the '80s with this. They did so on many of their 2005 shows as well.

Yet even music nerd....uh aficionados like us don't know it.

I just remember that the U2 tour I saw was for The Unforgettable Fire. I even got a t-shirt. Maybe they played something from that for the final song, or maybe they played 40. They do a lot of songs where everyone waves their arms and chants for 10 minutes, so half the time you wouldn't even know what song is being played.
