Concerts you have attended?

Not my first choice, but I’d see them if tickets weren’t stupid expensive.

The played the record from start to finish? People sat at a concert listening to the actual album?
No, the band played the songs in the order of the album. It was all live music. The record player was just for effect.

There are events that do just that though.

Hurting this morning - 4 hours sleep, & sore cuz I'm old & not used to rockin' the fuck out for 90 straight minutes anymore. Couldn't care less. The setlist was damn near perfect ( for me - we got "The Flame", which I could've done without. But it gives Robin a big solo moment, so I get it. And I'd be the grandaddy of all liars if I didn't admit to tearing up a little when he hit that big note at the end like one of the GOATs ) & the band seemed to be in great spirits. Just ridiculous that they're still that great when the combined age of the band is something like 893 years old.

Here's your set list

Dream Police
Just Got Back
Stiff Competition
Big Eyes
California Man (The Move cover)
On Top of the World
Borderline
Ain't That a Shame (Fats Domino cover)
Voices
Light Up the Fire
So Good to See You
I Know What I Want
The Flame
I Want You to Want Me
Surrender

Encore:
Clock Strikes Ten
Goodnight

I only know 5 of the 17 songs, and like 4 of those 5.

Here's my ideal Cheap Trick set list, which will probably be ripped apart by the "kids-of-the-70s" on here. Favorites at the beginning and end, okay songs in the middle.

"Let Go"
"You Want It"
"Tonight It's You"
"No Mercy"
"Dream Police"
"Surrender"
"Up the Creek"
"The Summer Looks Good on You"
"She's Tight"
"Wrong Side Of Love"
"If You Want My Love"
"Space"
"Long Time Coming"
"The Flame"
"I Want You to Want Me"

Encore:
"No Direction Home"
"Never Had a Lot to Lose"

Haha, I've seen them live (with Squeeze) and I like them, but I've always thought they didn't deserve all the hoopla they've gotten. Not that they lack talent, but because they haven't generated all that many hit songs.

But they're essentially a 70's band, regardless of what kind of kid I am.

I am glad they are incuding their hits from "Dream Police". That is/was my favourite Cheap Trick album.

But not too many hits that they have to drop some. It looks like they are playing them all.

That's how I think of them too. But I don't think they became well known until 1979. Their first Hot 100 entry was "Surrender" in 1978, but only a minor hit. Then this happened:

When “I Want You To Want Me” was originally released as the lead single of the band’s second studio album in 1977, it did not chart internationally except for a modest #97 showing in Canada. But a tour opening for Queen in Japan that year gained them an audience there:

"All of a sudden we started getting all this fan mail and became really popular there"

A promoter hired Cheap Trick to play two shows in 1978 which would be used for a Japanese TV special. Songs from these performances were later released as Cheap Trick at Budokan in Japan. Also, a promotional record From Tokyo To You was sent to radio stations in the US featuring seven of the live tracks. DJs began playing the live recording of “I Want You To Want Me” in early 1979.

The live version eventually peaked at #7 in the US in the summer of 1979 and also topped the charts in Japan, Belgium and The Netherlands (and reached #2 in Canada), effectively launching the band into international stardom. The follow-up single, the live recording of Fats Domino’s “Ain’t That Shame” quickly became the band’s second top 40 hit in the US. This spurred the release of Cheap Trick At Budokan in countries outside of Japan.

After that, they had two more top 40s in '79 with "Dream Police" and "Voices". Then a half dozen minor hits. In 1987, the band was, from what I understand, basically told to work with outside songwriters or else. 1988's Lap Of Luxury gave them 3 top 40s and another minor hit. I knew a few Cheap Trick songs before '88, but that's their album that I listen to start to finish (well, I skip "Ghost Town" - even though that was one of the top 40s). So to me they were "that band that had a few hits before I was a teenager, then scored a huge album (that I like) in 1988".

From my perspective, they had success in the late 70's, then disappeared, and then in 1988 they were back on the radio with a ballad and a cover. So to me it was a little blip in their career.

  • Tom Cochrane & Red Rider [09/16 Richmond Hill Centre, Richmond Hill, ON]

This concert was last night. This was with my wife. She selected a place to eat called Grill Gate which was a block from the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts. We parked at the venue and walked (she rode in her wheelchair) the 1 city block to get there. We arrive there and there was a huge step at the front. So we cruised down the street looking at places, all with a step. We came across the Instabul Cafe which was flat. We tried it. I found something called a Donor which I thought would be the same as a Donair which I had as a teenage at a mall in Regina. It wasn't but was very good. We enjoyed our meal and aside from the waitress messing up the bill (after I paid) it was a good visit. Cost me 10 minutes of time while they worked out how to do a credit card refund. We got almost to the Centre before I realized in the process they had refunded me her entire tip. Oh well.

This is my first concert in this venue since I saw the Bay City Rollers the night before the world started to go to shit in 2020. This was their first concert since then as well. It was a different experience in a small intimate venue than the big concert halls I have been to of late. The first set Tom did was mostly himself and an acoustic guitar. He brought out the other members of Red Rider as the set progressed but the first set was all acoustic. Not my favourite style particularly a couple of the songs he did were harder songs. The second set was power guitars and more rock. He did use the acoustic guitar himself with everybody else doing electric for a couple songs.

I did enjoy the concert but it fell short against the other concerts of the summer. One of the reasons was it was pretty obvious that they were using the volunteer (assumption) staff of the Centre for sound and lights. There were some sound misqueues and there were lots of cases where the wrong light was turned on or off. Setlist below. It was nice to have an intermission.

Tom Cochrane Setlist

I am seeing the upcoming list is getting smaller and I am glad. I love concerts but I may have over did it a tad this summer. Good to have a break. About the only band I would buy concert tickets for now is Queen. I am going to pass on the Smashing Pumpkins.

2023:

Who is your top bands you always wanted to see but never did?
Queen with Freddie Mercury.

I was lucky enough to grab Bob Segar (twice) before he hung up his tour boots. I can't think of anybody else I really must see who I haven't already seen. Lots of bands which would be ok to see live. I think I overcompensated with the 2020-21 not being able to see anybody with this 2022 explosion. Think I got to swing back to an equilibrium now.

I'm surprised they didn't play She's Tight.
It was a pretty big hit for them.
We still play it.

They've been playing it some lately. They really mix the setlist up - I counted something like 8-9 different songs in the show I saw from the one just a couple nights before. If you go to their website they have a section that lists all the setlists.

This is where I make you jealous by mentioning I saw 'em on the "Lap Of Luxury" tour in Joplin MO when I was 22. The 2nd time I saw them.

You should give some of their early records a whirl - you can get one of those boxes that has like 5 CD's in it cheap.

Yes I am, assuming they played all of side 1 of Lap Of Luxury - which I love.
It was a loooooooooong time ago, & that particular show isn't up on setlist.fm. But I remember for a fact that they played "Let Go" ( one of my favorites from "LOL" ) & setlists from around that time back it up. Other than that, it seems like it was mainly the other 3-4 singles from the album that got played on that tour ( although I think I saw that they played "Wrong Side Of Love" a couple times ).

I haven't listened to that record in forever - maybe I'll make it my workout soundtrack later this morning.
