  • Lionel Richie with Earth Wind & Fire [08/08 Scotiabank Arena, Toronto, ON]

I saw this show on Tuesday. It was ok. I found Earth, Wind & Fire had more energy on stage but I was much more familiar with Lionel Richie's music. He did Commodores stuff as well. 2 channel changers which I endured. Fortunately he did a shortened version of "Endless Love" and I did not find it or "We Are The World" as nauseating as I usually do.

There were a disproportionate number of females in the audience too so it seemed weird. And this would have been a very good thing in the 80s, not so much today given that the females would have been the same ones going to the show in the 80s. My wife was supposed to go with us but she is still unable to get into her wheelchair so she didn't. We FaceTimed and texted her recordings of the songs she wanted to hear (I always have a projected setlist before a show).

Seats were great. They were wheelchair seats. If I was asked about it, I would have told them why we did not have someone requiring handicapped seating with us. But it never came to that. The attendant did ask me if I was ok with the escalator or if I needed the elevator.

I should add that when Lionel came out (through the floor in the runway) he sounded a bit off key. But he was also fiddling with his earpiece and I am hypothesizing that he was having issues with his monitor and was not hearing himself sing. It seemed to start working and he sounded better about 1/2 way through "Hello".

How does that work?

If he pretended to be each of the other performers (especially Michael Jackson, Boy George, Kim Carnes & Cyndi Lauper), this would be EPIC

Sorry your wife couldn't be there
During a guitar solo they mixed in the definitive guitar (or is that synthesizer) opening of Jump.

He played the backing vocal track along with videos from the music video on the big screen. The band played the instruments and he added lead vocals. It sounded pretty good for a song I dislike although my dislike is not for the music but the arrogance of the song.

I would've loved this.

I'm 99% sure he's one of the performers I've seen on TV using a ridiculous amount of Autotune. It's just a fact of life when you're still performing in your 70s.

Haven't updated my concert list in a while again. In the past month, my partner and I saw. Bryan Adams w/Joan Jett & The Blackhearts and Foreigner w/Loverboy.

Joan Jett was great, but Bryan Adams concert was incredible. Possibly one of my top 5 all-time now.

Last night we saw Loverboy, they were good. The band members, sort of look like guys out of a retirement home. But Foreigner put on a great show for their farewell tour.

My concert lineup changed again. I'm going to Saturday show Boots In The Park. I got notified that Travis Tritt canceled and and Rodney Atkins will replace him. Now the lineup has gotten even better.

Disturbed rescheduled their canceled show back in July and now it's in March. Way much better cooler weather.

Outdoor concert canceled by Phoenix extreme heat has a new date. At least it won't be hot

I saw Madonna in concert probably like 15 years ago. She was like 2 hours late and only preformed her new songs, no old school songs. I wanted to surprise my partner to see her and wanted to give her a another chance. She post-postpone her early tour while she was sick and rescheduled some dates. Now the damn bitch canceled the January show when we are suppose to go. I'm officially done with Madonna! I got burned twice and will never see her in concert again. Even if someone gave me free tickets, I would throw them away and probably change the station, if I heard her music on the radio.

Madonna's Phoenix concerts: One is canceled and one is rescheduled

I did add one more show a drag queen we both like Jimbo as he is funny as hell. There one more concert, I might buy. Luke Bryan isn't coming to Phoenix anytime soon. But he will be preforming a few shows in Vegas.

I've been doing that since "Holiday" and "Lucky Star" back in 1983!

To quote myself:

Her career is so long and diverse, and her music so ubiquitous, that even haters have to like at least a couple of her songs. I'm no Madonna fan, and some of her songs I just plain despise, but she's had some that I like too.

Their another concert I just found out about. My sister told me, that she and my brother-in-law will be attending it and my partner is a big fan of her Pat Benatar. I like her as well and I didn't know she was coming to Phoenix. Well another show added to my list.

Wed, September 27rd - Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo @ Mullett Arena

Some people in Phoenix does have fun with the mullet name for Mullett Arena. All I know it's named after someone, it's a 5,000 seat arena on ASU property. Home of the men's hockey team and temporary home of the Arizona Coyotes.

  • Guns 'N' Roses with The Pretenders [09/03 Rogers Centre, Toronto, ON]

This show was tonight. The show was scheduled to start @ 6PM. It started about 6:20PM. It finished at 11:20PM. I think it is the longest show I have ever attended. It was a rock show. Both bands rocked.

The show was at the Rogers Centre. This is the baseball park of the Toronto Blue Jays. For a concert the roof is closed. This means that all sides are cement and metal. Not ideal for acoustics. When I saw Imagine Dragons and Elton John there, their sound crews successfully adapted their sound equipment to compensate. Neither band did a great job of that tonight. It was not a showstopper but it was disappointing. In addition, The Pretenders sound guy was on some sort of drugs. He had Chrissy Hyne's mic way down to start. He did correct it some as the show went on but we never really heard her clearly which was a disappointment.

Neither band did encores. Axel said he wasn't going to do one as he didn't want to waste the time of going off and on the stage again (this is the first show he has not done an encore though). He said he would rather just play songs. The opener rarely does encores so that was not unexpected.

The people ahead of us were assholes. While I appreciate that they may want to stand occasionally, and we were in the upper level of the Rogers Centre so we had stadium seating, it is not necessary to wave your arms straight in the air guaranteeing to block the view of the guy behind you even if he is standing too. Fortunately, I found a vantage point by leaning forward and sort of looking through them. I do hope they enjoyed my off key catterwalling I did when they were recording parts of the show. I am sure being forward I was very audible. I deliberately messed up some lyrics too. Yes, I can be petty.

We also got whiffs of funny cigarettes. I guess the stoners couldn't be a minute without their drugs. I could maybe understand hour 5 but they were smoking them hour 1. True addicts.

When I go to concerts I like to have an idea what songs are coming up. I grab setlists of past shows from the internet and have those printed so I can usually expect 99% of the songs. Tonight, The Pretenders added some songs. One was "Brass In Pocket" which made me happy. It is not one they have been playing so I was disappointed going in. Guns 'N' Roses completely scrambled their playlist. They also added 3 or 4 songs and dropped 1 ("Patience"). And given I don't know about 1/2 the songs it was challenging to follow along.

Overall, I liked the show and the bands. I think my son and I have decided though that we won't see another concert at Rogers Centre. Setlists below.

Once again, very entertaining write-up. That's a lot of songs by both bands, but especially by GnR. And yes, as we get older, we're less tolerant with the assholes we come across at concerts.

But I do have to (once again) take exception to the pot smoking comments. We live in a pot-smoking world. I'm not sure why you categorize it any differently than drinking. And smoking at concerts pre-dates your awareness of rock music. Don't know why you feel this is suddenly notable.

If they injected their drugs in their seats or snorted it up their nose, I have no objections. I hate having to breath their leftover smoke because they can't wait for their next hit. Yes it's all perfectly legal ... except inside an absolutely no smoking venue which Rogers Centre is ... and I have to wonder why they couldn't do their hit before the show rather than while at the show. The fact they needed to do this inside a non-smoking facility does point to them being addicted and therefore an addict. Legal addiction has been around since they invented the cigarette. Doesn't mean they aren't addicts.

Good write-up.

Those are two big sets.

I don't mind people smoking the devil's lettuce at concerts, but I do get more annoyed than I used to at people getting in my space while I'm trying to watch the show.

Are you actually aggravated that people get high at rock concerts? Are you aware of how that sounds?
