Concerts you have attended?

This weekend, I attended Upheaval here in Grand Rapids, the yearly rock festival.

Friday, I saw Of Mice and Men, Killswitch Engage, Sevendust and Godsmack. Saturday, I saw a little bit of Sleep Theory, Drowning Pool, Badflower, Beartooth and Bad Omens.

Grand Rapids is definitely a rock-friendly city and it showed with the huge crowd and long lines for food and merchandise. Once the new soccer stadium is built, they ought move it there. It gets crazier every year.

Thought about it once or twice, but never used one.

Didn't realize the term also applies to bikes. I was on a rickshaw last October in Central Park then!

This weekend was our 2nd time seeing the wonderful rock/folk/country artist Patty Griffin. The last time was 25 years ago. We decided to get tickets this time because 1) she was in the area, and 2) she was performing at the awesome and intimate Stone Mountain Arts Center in the western mountains near the Maine/NH border. I should note that the first time we saw her was in this little club that a local guy had, where we were able to stand 10 feet from the stage. That was one of our all-time best concert experiences, and we never thought we'd top it.

We decided to make a day of it, and arrived early. We were the 3rd group of people checking-in, so we got number 3 for our dinner reservation. The venue consists of 2 timber-frame barns joined together, and seats a few hundred people in the dinner concert configuration.

We became friendly with another group we met there (number 4) during the hour we had to schmooze, drink, and relax. So when it came time for dinner, we were all seated together at a front table. And when I stretched my legs, my feet touched the stage. The dinners were fantastic and all served promptly, like on a cruise ship. On this tour, Patty is partnering with the awesomely talented Dave Pulkingham. He not only played every manner of guitar, but he did all the percussion with a series of tambourines, and a foot-kicker thing. Plus he sang harmony and backing vocals. Patty, of course, had her selection of 3 guitars, a mandolin, and a grand piano. Dave's foot-pedal cluster was right in front of me, just past his monitor, which my shoulder was almost touching. It was neat seeing all the stuff he was doing with his feet while playing.

Patty has been living in Austin TX for some time, but she's from Maine. Not only were the performances from these two super-talented people great, but there was a nice emotional aspect to the evening, with her local and personal stories. They've had artists like Brandi Carlisle, Nick Lowe, Los Lobos, and Paula Cole perform at the venue, plus comedians and other stuff. So We'll definitely look to go back again.

Speaking of which, I might as well put this here. After all, I attended a concert last night; it was just that I was the one performing. We played our summer concert at the Salisbury Beach oceanfront stage. This is what the stage looks like

As you can see, it's about the right size for a 5-piece band. To say it was a tight fit for the 45 members of our concert band is an understatement. Also, the sound sucks for us (I don't know if it's any good for the audience), it's like being inside a giant megaphone.

But the biggest problem, as @sadchild will attest to, is that it's in Salisbury. I'm not sure if you can tell, but there's a beach directly behind the stage. So groups of partying "young adults", who might be blasting Latin-style music, tend to congregate there. It's a great accompaniment to a delicate oboe solo. Then there's the ever-present roar of Harleys and the occasional sport bike. At least the people who came there to listen enjoyed it.

That venue for Patty Griffin is gorgeous!

BTW what's with her drummer's bass drum? That symbol on it? It's very very familiar to me, as you can see below:

That picture came from the venue, so maybe it really is Adam Ezra group. For the last 10 miles of the drive up there, through Brownfield ME, there is no cell signal; it's in a valley surrounded by mountains. When we arrived, there were a couple of very down-homey Mainers directing us on where to park our car in the dirt lot. One of them was an entertaining guy who explained that there was no purpose in bringing a cell phone into the venue, as there's no signal, and there's absolutely no recording of any kind during the performance. So we just left them in the car. Hence the stock footage.

Nice shell. How in the hell did everyone fit on that stage without their instruments, let alone with them?

It kida looks like a ducks-ass too.

It was a great concert last night. I would have posted more, but my cell service was crap where I was sitting.

The Pretenders ended their sat with probably my favorite song of there’s, Mystery Achievement.

I only recognized one L7 song. Still a good set.

I really enjoyed the Foo Fighters set. Dave Grohl brings a lot of energy. We left right after Monkey Wrench. Need to get home and didn’t want to wait in traffic.
