DRC Madness #23 - DRC All-Time Songs

Is it Sound or Sounds?
I've seen both on official releases

Paul Simon's lyrics say "the sound of silence." Simon & Garfunkel, accompanied by bassist Bill Lee and guitarist Barry Kornfield, recorded The Sound Of Silence on March 10 1964 at Columbia Recording Studio in New York City. The song appeared – mistitled The Sounds Of Silence – on their debut album, Wednesday Morning 3 A.M. Dick Summer, late-night DJ at WBZ in Boston, began playing the song in spring of 1965. It gained in popularity as other stations started playing it. Executives at Columbia thought the song could be a hit single if, as Fred Bronson wrote in The Billboard Book Of Number One Hits, "they could electrify it." Tom Wilson, who produced the original recording, was in the studio with Bob Dylan on June 15 1965 to record Like A Rolling Stone. After that song was completed, Wilson had the drummer, bassist and electric guitarist record a new backing track for The Sound Of Silence. The song went to number one in the last week of 1965.

A remake by Disturbed reached #42 on the Hot 100 in April 2016 – and they got the title correct.

Interesting list, although I would have had more Joni, more Cohen, and more Lightfoot.

Edit: it seems criminal that more of their songs were not included.

I guess it depends on the crowd that voted.

No songs by Anne Murray either.

Four of the five members of Steppenwolf had been members of the Sparrows. I'm surprised no Sparrows songs are on the list. If You Don't Want My Love, their first single, reached #3 in Canada in 1964. It should have been a hit in the US too, but it never charted. Future Steppenwolf lead singer John Kay joined the group in 1965. They changed their name to Sparrow in 1966 and broke up in 1967.

I suspect that the choices were limited in the most part to songs on the stations playlist. There are lots of songs by Prism (an artist really big here in the late 70s) for example not included since the station restricts the Prism songs they play. They have added a few. They never play "Halleluja" for example.

The principle is similar to the madness we are counting. We were limited to 256 songs to choose from. If you could have chosen any music would you choose the same 50?

The station focused on music from the 70s, 80s and 90s. While they said top 100 of all time, the listeners voting would be listeners who preferred music later than the 60s.

The list has four 1960s songs but they're all from 1968 or 1969. And Rough Trade's High School Confidential will never be confused with the 1958 Jerry Lee Lewis hit with the same title!

Presumably a classic rock station. No rap, no country, no r&b, no EDM and no rock past about 1995...?

Solid list from what I skimmed. But I was waiting to see if "Informer" or "Let Your Backbone Slide" showed up.

Pop but no rap and limited crappy hits. They do play the namless horse song though.

In another quirk of the countdown, tonight's entries will include 3 more of our #1 songs. If you are keeping track this means all but 2 #1s will have been counted down and we are not yet into the top 20.

There's a lotta good songs on that list.
I thought some should have been higher on the list, and didn't know a couple were Canadian. (Our Lady Peace, Blue Rodeo, & Our Lady Peace)

Our Lady Peace must have really surprised you to list them twice. :)

Our Lady Peace and 54-40 surprised me.

I can't wrap my head around this. Of all the classic songs of the 50s, 60s, or 70s, from Beatles to the Beach Boys, this is your #1?
It's a good song. One could argue the same about "Reeling in the Years" as #1 as well. Or "Take It Easy". All 3 good songs but obviously heavily influenced by personal taste.
