I know the history and have seen him in concert. I also have the double live CD (or more correctly my wife did). The original song and this song will both qualify for this madness.

I finished step 1: grabbing all the 90s songs from my Scotch Sampler favorites list. It's 184 entries; each one is one or more songs. So maybe it's 300 or 400 songs. Step 2 will be paring those down.

My song listening at home or office is through iTunes (Music Match). It counts number of plays. I dumped 90s to excel sorted by play count, then assigned quick ratings for the songs to figure out my favorites.

I don’t have either of those things available.

Yeah, I will have to deal with the whole idea of including those songs. For one, I'll need to pare-down the list. But also, I'm thinking that obscure songs will just drop out anyway, because no one else will have them on their list. And this is more or less a popularity contest, right?

That is a good part of my consideration for selecting songs. It makes me think that I should stick with my picks from the charts.
I mean, songs like Battleflag from The Lo-Fi Allstars aren't going to get any votes, but a lot of my favorite stuff from the decade weren't mainstream tunes.

Out of my 300+ songs from the '90s, there are certain tracks that stand out as favorites because of their rhythm, beats, lyrics, and overall quality. I'm hoping that identifying those qualities will help me narrow down my top songs soon.

I tried doing a search, but the results didn't give me much useful information. How do you guys rate the quality of your music collections? I've seen some of you post lists of 300+ songs and easily sort or filter them by decade, rating, or other categories. I know IRBS usually uses a ***** / **** / *** rating system.

I was also thinking about incorporating something like Billboard chart rankings to help organize songs. At the same time, I sometimes feel chart rankings can be a lot like college football rankings where a group of industry people, media members, or other voters influence the results. Because of that, some lower-quality songs might end up ranked higher, while other great songs don't get the recognition they deserve.

Hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say. I'm curious how you evaluate and rank your own music collections beyond just chart performance.
