That was a tough one. I forgot to go back to make the pick. Tub is much more fun, but Mama is better written.

Chumbawamba "Tubthumping"
Ozzy Osbourne "Mama, I'm Coming Home"

Before posting the final results, we ended up with a couple more ties!

Going forward, during the Quarterfinals and Semifinals, any ties will be broken in favor of the song that has received the highest cumulative number of votes throughout the tournament.

As for the Finals, we'll wrap up the Madness with one last three-way showdown to determine the ultimate #1 Song of the ’90s!

How do you wind up with a 3 way showdown with a power of 2 tournament?

It's pretty simple. The three-way final happened because we had ties starting in Round 1. Instead of eliminating songs that were tied, I allowed them to advance, which changed the number of competitors in each round.

Here's how the tournament progressed:
  • Round 1: 128 songs
  • Round 2: 70 songs
  • Round 3: 35 songs
  • Round 4: Top 20
  • Quarterfinals: 12 songs
  • Semifinals: 6 songs
  • The Finals: 3 songs
A traditional power-of-two bracket works when exactly half the competitors advance each round. Once ties were allowed to advance, that structure went out the window.

Even if we had ended up with 10 songs in the Quarterfinals instead of 12, the numbers still wouldn't have followed a traditional power-of-two bracket. We would have had 10 competitors, then 5, which is still an odd number heading into the next round.

Rather than forcing eliminations just to make the math look pretty, I adjusted the tournament as it progressed.

That's how we ended up with a three-way final. It's DRC Madness, not DRC Perfectly Balanced Mathematics.

Normally, in past Madness tournaments, we've had Second Chance rounds, where I gave everyone another opportunity to advance after being eliminated.

This time, I decided to skip the Second Chance rounds to keep things moving. If I had included them, this Madness probably wouldn't finish until sometime in November.

Keep in mind, this Madness started back in late May, and I'm trying to wrap everything up before the end of October.

So, rather than dragging the tournament out any longer, I allowed ties to advance and adjusted the bracket accordingly. It may not be the traditional format, but it keeps things moving toward the finish line!

The Quarterfinals matches will begin tomorrow.

No need to apologize! I know how much time and effort goes into organizing and ranking all those songs. It's definitely not something you can throw together overnight, and I appreciate all the work you put into it.

With two Madness tournaments going on, plus the monthly celebrity voting, we've certainly got plenty happening around here!

And with DRC Madness #44: 2026 CDT kicking off in January, we're also heading into the holiday season, when many of us might not have as much time to spend on here.

Thanks again for all your hard work!

DRC Madness #42: #1 Song of the ’90s — QUARTERFINALS!

Four rounds down, and only 12 songs remain!

The competition is getting fierce as we enter the Quarterfinals! Some of the biggest hits of the ’90s are still standing, but only six will survive and advance to the Semifinals.

⚠️ VOTING RULES

Pick ONE song from each matchup to advance to the Semifinals.

If you plan on passing on a vote, please notate it!

Any ties will be broken by the song with the highest cumulative vote total throughout the tournament.

VOTING DEADLINE: Monday, October 26th or Tuesday, October 27th, 2026 (to be confirmed).

12 songs. 6 matchups. Only 6 will advance!

LET THE QUARTERFINALS BEGIN!
