so the majority of us agree that these chains make a much better burger. so whats the secret? w/5 guys i know i like how the patties are more juicy. but the bread/bun does suffer for that. also they are great cause their normal burger is a double. u gotta ask for a single patty. i know that may make me sound like a fat ass but it is better that way. also the toppings are first notch compared to any of the huge places. they just seem crispier and fresher. worth the extra 2-3 bucks and the no drive through.

so whats the deal...what do they do so much better?

cause 5 guys does take like an extra 15-20 mins out of my day to get on on the way to/post work.

I think the key to any of these smaller chains expanding is maintaining the quality of the taste. Ive seen local pizza chains try to expand and just not taste as good anymore.

They do some things that don't scale well. It's not too hard to keep a lid on the costs of shipping fresh ingredients to a few stores in a limited area. It's a whole other kind of problem to do that nationally or internationally.

They also do things that are just different from the major chains, and that makes them stand out. If there was a 5 Guys on every corner it might not be as "special" as it is now, and as a consequence, may not be perceived as "better".

I just notice that now, yea even these other fast food chains use yellow:

McD's
Burger King
Wendy's
Taco Bell

So does yellow mean something?

It's color psychology.
Orange and yellow stimulate the part of the brain that makes you hungry. It's like pink calming people down.

Just like Andrew said..

that makes sense but how does it justify the kinda significant bump in price? if its all about limited "special" locations then why cant they offer a much better burger for a buck like all the major chains? id drive way outta my way if i could get a 5 guys double for a buck like i can now at mcd's. or even bump it up to 2 bucks and id still happily make the extra drive.

at wendys right now we all can get the jr cheese deluxe for a buck. ok so its only one patty but u get all the fixings u get on the the other major chains 3 to 4 dollar burgers that are the best they offer. five guys goes up to around 6 dollars. that seems a bit much...yet i do still enjoy them about once a month or so.

Because $1 won't cover the cost of decent ingredients. You get what you pay for.

I have been to Culvers and In and Out on my travels. We have Five Guys here now. I miss Whataburger from my days in Texas,

There is a burger chain from the Carolinas that is growing too, called Cookout.

Cook-Out® Restaurant - "Cooked Outdoors Style"

We've got 5 Guys, which is great, but now I'm watching like a hawk when I'm on the road to see if I run into one of these other places. I must know!

I know 5 guys stores/equipment well, and I would guess at the places you guy know, Only make burgers and hotdogs for the kids, no chicken, cheese stix, breakfast, ect... AND I think the most important thing NO FREEZER at all, fresh means more deliveries, and labor to patty out each morn.

Five Guys just reopened in our area, and Cookout is rumored to be on the way. There is a Cookout down the road in Blacksburg (home of your Virginia Tech Hokies) and it does a SLAMMING business. My brother, a VT junior, loves it.

I had a Five Guys bacon double cheeseburger and an entire order of large Cajun fries for lunch. Hot. Damn.

Love 5 Guys and their crispy delicious fries! I finally had Whataburger and Cookout down here in NC. Not too shabby. 5 Guys is still better so far, but I'm willing to do more comparisons..... for science and whatnot.

I'll just double-up on the Lipitor on those days.

Finding a decent place that's open after 10PM down here in North Carolina is murder! ! ! ! !
I don't know how these people survive.

Did you move to North Carolina ?
