So here's a fun happening in Hecticart's Wonderful World of Architecture. (Kind of along the list of embarrassing stuff Koop shares with us regularly.)
I was on a job site today. The owner is doing the renovation work themselves, and hiring crews directly instead of hiring a general contractor. Its mostly finishes, and not many walls, so they are using 10 or 12 offices while the work is going on. They manage a lot of properties across the country, so they generally know how to get stuff done themselves.
It's a 2 story building and I had to walk through the whole thing to take notes and whatnot. They had a lot of the floor peeled up and were gluing down new vinyl flooring in some rooms, but not all. The old floors were just a little tacky, but where the new floors were going, the floors were pretty sticky. They roll a thin layer of the adhesive down and let it sit to set up for several hours so it bonds with the new vinyl better. Its not too bad to walk on, it just grips your shoes a bit and makes noise. I walked through enough of it that it started to build up and it kept trying to pull my shoes off. I went down the last corridor I needed to check out, and the glue was really sticky. I felt like I was in one of those nature shows where a caribou gets stuck in mud while hyenas are waiting to pounce on it.
At one point, I literally couldn't move my feet and I fell over. I managed to land on some boxes, so I didn't get stuck to the floor like a roach motel.
If I would have watched someone else do it, I would have been laughing my ass off. If any of the contractors had seen me do it, I couldn't ever go back to the job site.
As it stands right now, it's already pretty damned funny. I think I'll even tell my coworkers.
