International News

Did anyone catch 60 minutes on Sunday? I just saw the preview of it during football and one of the stories was about how all the good countries sanctioned Russia after they invaded Ukraine and 60 minutes was looking into if the sanctions worked or did anything really.

I wonder what they found out. I bet I could probably find it on YouTube but whatever. Also, who cares about international politics that may lead to the third world war when Sunday night football was on. 60 minutes wasn't worth my time hah. Although watching Dallas win is pretty much as bad as anything that could happen in a world war.

"G'day, mates. This is my 15-year-old son. He smokes marijuana, he uses fentanyl and he drinks Great Northern beer and Jacob's Creek wine. He's a bonzer lad and I'm rippin' proud of him. This is my 14-year-old daughter. I caught her trying to log on to Facebook. I'm bloody ashamed of her!"

Australia passes social media ban for children under 16

Social media sites will risk huge fines if they don't take "reasonable steps" to block users 16 and under in Australia. It is downright scary – and unreasonable – what those "reasonable steps" might be.

After Australia legislated a teen social media ban, it has to figure out how to enforce it

Usually I disagree with most everything Australia does poetically and I have not read into this at all... But from the headline alone, I think it's probably a good idea. And saying that makes me feel like an old fucking man but whatever.

Social media can't be a good idea for children unless there are strict guardrails on its content. I mean look at YouTube kids. Google does a pretty good job of making it safe for kids but shit still falls through the cracks. And that's Google.

Also, parents should have total control so if a parent wants to let their kid have full access to Twitter or whatever other site then there should be some way that a parents can give their approval.

Of course that leads to kids just stealing their parents license or whatever and getting access nefariously but it's better than what these sites do now which is not really try at all to prevent children from joining.

Oh shit, I'm just learning about this right now so I don't really know the details as to why it's happening. But apparently the president of South Korea declared martial law and then everybody started protesting and their Congress voted 190-0 to lift it.

Okay so it looks like he did it because he was just pissed at his opposition and he figured he had more support than he really did. And he's lifted it so he's not becoming a dictator or whatever. That's good news. South Korea is one of the good countries and they need to stay that way.

Meanwhile in NH

When students at Stevens High School in Claremont arrive at school this year, they must immediately surrender use of their phones.

First, they must turn their phones off, the student handbook states. Then, they must slip the phones into a “Yondr pouch”: a small fabric bag with a magnetic lock that can only be opened with a special device.

The students must keep their phones in their backpacks, nestled and locked. Only at the end of the day can they unlock the pouches and use the phones again

PS - TIL what a Yondr pouch is. Sounds dirty but it ain't.

Not very Gangnam style...

We had that at a comedy show a couple years ago. Annoying as hell.

Without getting into politics, or even involving the person who shall remain nameless, can anyone explain to me why the wasteland known as Greenland could possibly be considered important to the US "an absolute necessity"..."for economic security"?

I read that "[Greenland is] estimated to hold about a quarter of the world's rare earth minerals. With names such as cerium and lanthanum, rare earths contain key ingredients used in many of today's technologies — from smartphones to MRI machines, as well as electric cars and military jets ... The U.S. was once the world's top producer of rare earths. Now China is."

Is this the reason? China responding to threatened tariffs could mean a shortage here?

Haiti is such a mess. I mean I knew that before reading this article of course. They've been a mess for years and they particularly have been a mess since the president was killed a few years back and now they are more or less a completely failed State run by ganglords. One guy named barbecue seems to be the leader of the biggest gang or whatever down there and used to be a policeman. Anyway, this article has nothing to do about about him specifically, but it was in the Sentinel yesterday and I thought it was a good read and you all should check it out.
