Macy's bought Foley's, Marshall Field's, Robinsons-May, etc.

Alberton's bought Safeway

Basically a lot of box stores and malls got hit with these mergers and now this!

I never been a fan of Safway or Albertsons, because of there prices. I mainly do my grocery shopping at Wal-Mart or Fry's which is owned by Kroger's.

Aldi is starting to open some chains around the Phoenix area.

Albertsons Companies Inc. owns 21 supermarket chains including Albertsons, Vons, Safeway, Shaw's, Tom Thumb, Jewel-Osco and Acme Markets. The Kroger Company owns Kroger, Ralphs, Dillons, Smith's, Mariano's, QFC, Fred Meyer, King Sooper, Harris Teeter and Food 4 Less.

Two of the largest supermarket chains in America are merging

I'm hoping this doesn't go through. I figure it varies in different regions, but here in DC, Harris Teeter stores are pretty nice, while Safeways are horrible. And from my experience, mergers of this scale typically yield zero benefits for the consumer.

The consumer gets the worst service of the two for the higher price of the two.

I worked at one in 1989. My son works at that same one right now.

Shaw's also includes Star Market. So if you see a Star Market in Boston, it's Albertsons too!

In 2008, Shaw's announced that their Boston area stores were reverting to the Star Market name due to local history. As of August 2015, there are 22 stores that have been rebranded as Star Markets—primarily in the immediate Boston vicinity, but also on Cape Cod and the South Shore.

In my area there'd be Walmart, Amazon (Whole Foods) and these guys, that's it!

Trader Joe's is too far away, Aldi is non-existent. Safeway and Kroger are the big two, would be the big one if this goes through.

According to the FoodIndustry.com website, the top grocers in the United States are Walmart/Sam's Club, Amazon/Whole Foods, Costco, The Kroger Company and Alberstsons Companies. If the Kroger-Albertsons merger is approved, they would move into third place. Costco would be fourth and Netherlands-based Ahold Delhaize would be fifth. Ahold Delhaize owns Food Lion, Stop & Shop, Giant and Hannaford.

The interest rate on Capital One credit cards and Discover credit cards can be as high as 29.99%. Maybe this merger will result in the maximum rate doubling to 59.98%.. It wouldn't surprise me.

It kind of reminded me that back in the day, many considered Curtis Mathes the Cadillac of TVs. And then it became a Kmart off-brand.

I own a Vizio that I bought from Costco a few years ago. The story is that I originally bought a Samsung. It was a good TV until annoying vertical lines started popping up every few seconds. I actually sent the TV in for repair instead of just sending it back to Costco (why, Chuck, why?). Well, I decided to buy a small Vizio (the cheapest TV they had), and I liked it. So, when the Samsung came back, it was still showing the annoying lines. So, I returned the Samsung and got a 55-inch Vizio.

You know those bumper stickers on Teslas that read "bought it before we knew how awful he is"? I might have to do the same to mine that reads "bought it long before Walmart ruined it."

Sears (remember them?) would sell name-brand appliances and electronics like Sony, Whirlpool, and whatnot. You could buy something like a Sony TV with model #27DGUV-R56 from every other store on earth, but Sears sold the same TV as model #27DGUV-R56-s. They bought enough product that they would have them made with cheaper parts or circuits. Repair shops (remember them?) would have to have 2 sets of manuals.

I had run-ins with Samsung to the point where I boycotted them (for personal purchases) for many years. They sucked when it came to standing behind their products.
I remember that back in the days when it was Samsung vs Panasonic for plasma TVs, I kept considering Samsung, but then got scared away by boatloads of reviews about problems. My Panasonic plasma is still running as the bedroom TV.
