Minor Ailments

no matter how much anesthesia was used, whenever the dentist would press that tool in there it felt like hitting a raw nerve. It was horrible.
I've had a few minor fillings. One was so minor I did it without anesthetic because it was just a few small zings of pain and done. The rest I had Novocain. One of them, they gave me the shot. I felt the pain of the drill. They gave another. I still felt the pain of the drill. They gave a third. I still felt the pain of the drill. The dentist said we should just get it done, no more shots. Granted, it was not as bad as no numbing at all, but it was still quite painful.
I had gotten a filling when I was 16 or so.
I got one at 16. It fell out in my mid 20s. I didn't get it replaced until I was about 30 (I would avoid eating most foods on that side of my mouth for that span of 4-5 years). That's been my only root canal.

My aunt got an old root canal pulled and behind it was very infected. From what I understand, the nerves of the teeth are connected directly to the vagus nerve.

What is the Vagus Nerve? The vagus nerve, also known as the vagal nerves, are the main nerves of your parasympathetic nervous system. This system controls specific body functions such as your digestion, heart rate and immune system.

Some believe that an infected pocket behind a root canal (or removed wisdom tooth) can send toxins from the bacteria in the area directly into the bloodstream and cause problems anywhere and everywhere throughout the body. It is one theory that my rosacea (a chronic inflammatory skin disorder typically involving the nose, forehead, and chin that is characterized especially by redness) could have started from bacteria behind my root canal.

A documentary was made about how root canals "can cause cancer, heart disease and other serious chronic illness". Netflix added it to their catalog, then pulled it 29 days later after the American Dental Association (ADA), American Association of Endodontists (AAE) and American Association of Dental Research (AADR) complained "continuing to host the film on their platform could harm the viewing public by spreading misinformation about safe medical treatments like root canals".

For the last few years, I've been on the fence about having my root canal pulled and having the area cleaned. My aunt reports her health improved a lot since having hers pulled.

The first dentist I had as a kid was a WWII dentist. He didn't believe in freezing. Thought it was for wimps. So I had lots of fillings feeling the pain. He was gratious enough to freeze me when he extracted 4 teeth for braces. He was cheap though which is why we were going to him. The days before dental insurance.

Because the dentist doing it is even a more sadistic bastard than a regular dentist. By specializing in root canals, he can inflict even more pain and suffering to get his jollies.
It was completely painless, and I'm pretty sure their goal is to perform their procedures without causing pain. Pain has no benefit to anyone. These skilled dentists and dental surgeons are in it for the money, they want to see as many patients as possible, to get the most insurance money. They don't want pain, complications, or complaints; that doesn't help them make money. Get in, do the procedure right the first time, and get out. And keep a good reputation.

I should probably get this checked too but I can't eat ice cream without cold sensitivity.
I have (had) cold sensitivity because of gum recession. But using sensitive toothpaste takes care of it. But here's my tip to you: there are 2 types of products being sold as sensitive teeth toothpaste; one of them is crap, and the other works. Even the Sensodyne line of toothpaste sells both types.

The one you want has a stand-alone ingredient that's just for sensitivity - I believe it's called potassium nitrate. The other toothpaste just has a different type of fluoride - stannous fluoride instead of sodium fluoride. For me, that doesn't work. Your welcome.

And keep a good reputation.
One dentist I used to go to would tell my wife and I after every visit our teeth looked perfect, no issues. Then one time he told us we both needed minor fillings. We came back a month later and got them both filled. Normally, with other dentists, they tell you over time "keep an eye on this one", "brush back there a little better", "we'll keep an eye on that one", "the x-ray shows there may be an issue starting here". Nope, we went from perfect checkups every visit to a quick stick with the pick and "you both need fillings". It might have to do with the divorce he was going through at the time?

Maybe he understood the futility of telling a patient to brush a bit better or floss more regularly.

The 9 Most Hated Professions

Dentists · Stock Traders · School Principals · Used Car Salesmen · Lawyers · Tax Examiners · TV News Anchors · Politicians · Nurses

Yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and disagree with TV news anchors and nurses being on the list. I'll offer DMV employees and child welfare workers as substitutes.

Agree, mostly.

Who the hell hates nurses? They are the backbone of medicine and all guys have had at least one fantasy abt them.

I think maybe ppl are confused abt like local news anchors and ppl like maddow or tucker. I can understand how news presenters/entertainers can be hated.

Really the DMV blows worse than the depths of hell but the ppl working there have been OK in my anecdotal experience. If you can manage to be nice and joke around w them abt how their job sucks after waiting hours to talk to someone (which I know is difficult) they seem to be willing to help ya out. It's just they way that our state governments are set up that makes the organization as a whole a waking nightmare.

Hey IdRather, is the DMV called the DMV in Canada or do you have your own name for them?
