I'm realizing that I may not have told the recent story of my tooth. Two days before leaving for Costa Rica, I'm chewing one of these...

which I think are made by the ADA to boost revenue. And a crown in the back of my mouth comes out. I got an emergency appointment with my dentist on the day before flying. They smoothed it out a bit, but basically said it would have to come out after I get back. They gave me penicillin for my trip, in case there was pain, but fortunately, it didn't bother me.
So this was a year ago, when we were about to go to Costa Rica.
Fast forward to this year. Less than 2 weeks before we leave for Costa Rica, Mrs. Scotch and I are doing a midday hike with the dogs. At the time, there wasn't much snow on the ground, and there was exposed grass. There was ice on the heavily-walked paths, but it was easy to get around it. So we didn't wear our micro-spikes.
But on the heavily wooded slopes, there was ice that we couldn't get around. And I went down hard. I had been stepping carefully, but the foot I was NOT stepping with gave out. I hit the ground with my left arm folded, so that my elbow impacted the ice, shoving my hand and forearm into my shoulder and neck.
For the next week, I'm taking over-the-counter pain meds, but things are not getting better. My doctor has me go to the walk-in, where they take an x-ray, and see nothing wrong. This walk-in visit turned out to be quite problematic, for 2 reasons:
- They send me to the ER, where they do a CAT scan, and see that I have an inline fracture to my clavicle (collar bone), which was not caught on the x-ray;
- While in the waiting room, a guy towing a trailer clips the back of my car in the parking lot, causing seemingly minor - but expensive - damage.
I'm prescribed pain meds, and I follow-up with my doctor before we head to Costa Rica. Mrs. Scotch says we can postpone the trip, as we have travel insurance. But I decide I'd rather rest in tropical warmth, rather than sit in subfreezing temps, and watch 2 feet of snow dump on us. Besides, putting on coats and sweatshirts is painful.
Now that I'm back, I'm glad we went. It was somewhat difficult to sleep some nights, but it would've been the same if we stayed home. I was told this will take about 6 weeks to heal. I found that the only pain meds that really work for me is Tylenol. So that's all I'm taking.
