This seems like the best thread to talk about awesome covers.

I almost never find the cover better than the source material but sometimes they can come really close. I was posting about Chris Cornell's cover of Imagine in The Beatles cover thread and instead of hijacking that with non Beatles stuff I figured I'd ramble about this here.

MJ's original is obviously better but my favorite type of cover is when the artists significantly alter the original. I've never really felt like crying during Billie Jean until I heard this:

And while we're on the topic of Billie Jean covers, this one is a million times better than Michael Jackson's original and it puts Chris Cornell to shame and it's the greatest song I've ever heard in my life:

Like others here, I also like Leonid & Friends, a huge band from Moscow that tribute Chicago hits and some non hits then moved on to other groups. I missed seeing them at the Wisconsin Dells but maybe they will come back

Love them, but I wouldn't classify those as covers. That's a tribute band.

And now I'm going to be a hypocrite and post this Randy Travis classic cause the end is so sweet.

Carrie Underwood does a rather basic cover but Randy saying Amen at the end is really cool.

He had a major stroke in 2013 and it really fucked him up. To the point where he kinda looks retarded now and can't really talk at all, let alone sing. So being able to sing the last lyric of his song was pretty amazing.

He was the first guy I listened to when I began getting into country a few months back.

I am somewhat obsessed with this cover and have listened to it no fewer than 10 times today.

As a result, I decided to explore her catalog. Turns out I don't really like her when she has a band with her. But her cover of Teen Spirit is on one of her albums that is simply Tori sitting at a Steinway with a microphone and that album is amazing. Almost every single song on it has wound up on my Spotify favorites list. She does Led Zeppelin covers too, which are really cool.

If you asked me yesterday who is Tori Amos I would have said oh yeah she's some like pop singer from the '90s and I would have had no idea she played piano like really well.

And now I know that while she is kind of some pop singer from the '90s, she's also like a classically trained pianist with a beautiful voice who when going acoustic like that, pretty much makes every song, even if it's about something happy, make me feel sad but in a kind of nice way. I don't know it's weird. It's like fucking girl shit. Emotions are dumb.

Tori Amos started writing songs when she was three – but she has said in interviews that she can't remember what her earliest songs were about. At age 5, she entered the Peabody Conservatory of Music's preparatory division (for school-aged children) on a full scholarship. She was the youngest student ever admitted. Here is her first single, Baltimore, co-written with her brother Michael and released under the name Ellen Amos. She was 16. Her birth name is Myra Ellen Amos.

Atlantic could have released Led Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven as a single but then the Led Zeppelin IV album might not have sold 50 billion copies.
