Halestorm

Genre: heavy rock, radio metal

Discovered: don't remember, but it was "I Get Off".

Other: In the summer of 2005, my metal band Hostile Witness was given the opportunity to open for their first national act: Ra ("Do You Call My Name"). My bandmates, of course, blew it. Did no work and bailed a month before the show. I called the club owner to tell him and he said, "Marky, you're letting me down here!" I responded with, "I spoke to my other band A Simple Complex and they're willing to do it." He accepted. I was busy the whole show. After our set, I was making new connections and giving out free CDs, autographing some of them. I didn't pay attention to the acts between my band and Ra. One of those bands was an unknown act touring with Ra named.... Halestorm. So I don't remember their set at all, but I evidently opened for them. This is back when Lzzy Hale was only 21. Her brother, the drummer, was only 19.

HIGH FIVE:

1. I Get Off
2. It's Not You
3. Familiar Taste Of Poison
4. Dear Daughter
5. Nothing To Do With Love

She can belt it out for sure.

That‘s cool getting to open for bands like that, and killer that you managed to get your other band to do it instead of completely missing out.

Hatebreed

Genre: metalcore

Discovered: don't remember

Other: Very heavy, but lyrically about overcoming struggle and refusal to be oppressed. Some ignorant music writer wrote an article for CNN about racist bands and, simply based on this band's name, included them as white supremacists. The band was not impressed.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Looking Down The Barrel Of Today
2. This Is Now
3. Before Dishonor
4. I Will Be Heard
5. Last Breath

I saw them back in 87. Mr. Mister opened for them.
It was a very good show and the sisters sounded great.
We were front row. A friend of mine was a manager at a head-shop that sold concert tickets and he would call the other shops to find out who had front row seats. We would go to the store that had them and camp out with a cooler of beer and party till the store opened.
We saw a number of shows front row that way.

At one point Nancy came over to our side and handed my buddy a guitar pick. She came back over later on in the set and started to hand me a pick, but at the last second she handed it to my buddy instead. He thinks it's because she liked him. I know what he looks like and think she thought she gave me the first one.

HIM

Genre: goth rock

Discovered: co-worker

Other: Every single song they've written is about two lovers dying. Only their cover songs might have a different topic. Some of their covers (like "Don't Fear The Reaper") are still about lovers dying.

HIGH FIVE:

1. Wings Of A Butterfly
2. Wicked Game (Chris Issac cover)
3. Heartkiller
4. Scared To Death
5. Your Sweet Six Six Six

You do know "Hall & Oates" hate to be called that. They prefer "Daryl Hall & John Oates". Should have been with the Ds in your list. :)

You do know "Hall & Oates" hate to be called that
I didn't. Interesting. So if they don't want to be called that, they shouldn't have had any issue with this, then?

Hyro The Hero

Genre: rap metal

Discovered: don't remember

Other: First time I heard "Sleeping Giants" I thought, "Finally! Someone following in the footsteps of Rage Against The Machine who's doing the genre justice! Musically AND lyrically!"

HIGH FIVE:

1. Sleeping Giants
2. Bullet
3. Live Your Fuckin Life
4. Locked Loaded Ready
5. Devil In Disguise

I like it. That’ll wake you up when you’re working late. There’s a little more punk than Rage, but some other melodic bits that give em their own personality to spite the similarities.

At one of my former jobs, in my younger days, it was common to work till long after midnight to get drawings done for deadlines. We had a very mild mannered, super chill, landscape architect that would often work late too. One night around 12am, he came up to my desk asking to borrow a couple of cd’s to give him a boost. I gave him a stack. He came back a couple hours later yelling ”Fu@# you I won’t do what you tell me!” He borrowed that disk a lot.
