No, he's not a headbanger mosh-pitter like me, he's into EDM (modern video game music, more specifically). His go-to music artist right now is Acutic Notes. Yeah, I'd never heard of them either. When he was about 9, he was listening to Knife Party. Yeah, I'd never heard of them either. Our closest overlaps are Celldweller and Missio.

Most of my photos of him are taken when I've walked into the house and he's done something that would sound impossible, but somehow he's done it anyway. Like this cube of hangars, for example.

And he's the one that's whipping your but in the guess the #1 game on the 80s countdowns?

I know Knife Party, and had learned one of their songs on guitar.
I'll check out Acutic Notes.

That's kinda cool. He should consider becoming an architect.

So now that I've gotten those last 12 pages of music out of the way, I can finally get to the real stuff that I loved, obsessed about, and went to concerts for, in my prime driving around/ going to school days (daze).

I was all-in on the post-punk era, and along with Elvis Costello and Talking Heads, there was a new group of artists breaking out. But before we get to that, listen to this

Gang of Four – I Found That Essence Rare

So as I was saying, one of these post-punk new wave breakout artists was The Police. This early song from their first album shows the energy and talent just bursting out.

The Police – Next to You (live)

Their other hits from this time period are so familiar, I'm not going to repeat them here.
Edit: note Copeland's drum skins at the end of the song.

My first album obsession from this time period is Joe Jackson's first two: Look Sharp, and I'm the Man. He released them both in '79; he was on fire. Early Joe is not jazzy, or a blend of world music; it's pure post-punk.

Joe Jackson – One More Time (live)

This was a hit from the first album
Joe Jackson – Sunday Papers

And it ended like this
Joe Jackson – Got the Time (live)

Of course, the title track, Look Sharp! was a hit, as was Is She Really Going Out With Him? The follow-up album had hits like On Your Radio and It's Different for Girls, plus the title track

Joe Jackson – I’m the Man (live)

And the album closes with another high energy hit

Joe Jackson – Friday (live)

I've seen them live a bunch of times, and this group of musicians are awesome together.

Does First Wave play them? I listen and don't remember hearing them on there. They should.
They might play Man in Uniform, but not the other stuff; it's too punk and underground. They play Anarchy in UK from Sex Pistols, which is really out of place for the channel, but I guess it was big, so that's why.

Back when XM and Sirius we're still separate entities, you heard Gang of Four on XM's punk outlet (which name escapes me at the moment) a few times.

Tom Morello played Gang of Four on his One Man Revolution show a couple of weeks ago. I don't remember if it was Damaged Goods or another one.

As we finished the 70's and entered the "Hey, it's the 80's!" era, here are a few more influential bands worth noting.

The Clash. Ah yes, The Clash. I think if I was British, and more aware of British politics, I'd be more into them. People think they're the second coming of Christ. I'm more like "meh". But they put out some hits, like London Calling, Lost in the Supermarket, Clampdown, Train in Vain, Rock the Casbah, and these

The first song was influenced by their arrival to NYC, where they heard the urban radio station WBLS. I especially like the intro to this video

The Clash – The Magnificent Seven (live on Tom Snyder)

The Clash – Should I Stay or Should I Go (live at Shea Stadium)

Blondie was a fresh, innovative band that ushered-in the new wave. They put out 3 big albums in a row, with hits like Hanging on the Telephone, One Way or Another, Heart of Glass, The Hardest Part, The Tide is High, and these

Blondie – Dreaming (live)

and they introduced rap to suburban white people
Blondie - Rapture

I love that song but that has got to be the worst rap on the face of the planet.
Haha! I watched a video of a live performance of that song, but I felt it was too lame to post, so I went with the album version. Certainly our expectations (of what was considered to be good rap) were low when that song came out. At the time, I was like "how does she do that?"

I am not a rap fan. But even then I thought the rhymes were stupid "now they only eat guitars".

On a different note, I find it interesting on how fast after this Blondie went out of favour on top 40 radio. 3 #1s in a row (4 in total) then I'm not sure they ever broke the top 40 after that.

According to Wikipedia, they only hit #82 on the hot 100 with their 'Reunion' track in 1999, "Maria".

They didn't put out another album for 2 years; and when they did, it was a concept album that flopped, and they broke up. So there wasn't anything for top 40 radio to play.

But they join a small group of artists whose last charting hit was a #1 song. A smaller group I would think when you exclude the one hit wonders.

Clash

I'm not a punk fan, but I really like the Clash songs that were radio hits (love the first three listed, the next two are good but not great).

1. Rock The Casbah
2. This Is Radio Clash
3. Train In Vain
4. London Calling
5. Should I Stay Or Should I Go?

Blondie

In the early/mid 80s Debbie Harry embarked on a (relatively) very unsuccessful solo career. But I think "Maria", the reunion song, is one of Blondie's best.
