It is never sweet when I find another hit song is missing from the list. The Sweet Inspirations – Cissy Houston (mother of Whitney Houston), Estelle Brown, Mynra Smith and Sylvia Shemwell – had nine top-50 R&B hits, 1967-71. Sweet Inspiration, their biggest hit, reached #5 in April 1968 and was their only top-40 pop hit, peaking at #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #20 on the Cash Box Top 100. Derek "Spooner" Oldham, who co-wrote the song with Dan Penn, plays lead guitar. Penn and Oldham also wrote James & Bobby Purify's I'm Your Puppet and the Box Tops' Cry Like A Baby.
The Memphis Music Hall Of Fame website explains Oldham's nickname: "When he was four years old, while reaching for a pan on the kitchen stove, he dislodged a spoon that struck him in the face, damaged his retina and ultimately cost him the sight in his right eye. Years later he told the story to a fifth-grade friend, who began calling him Spooner, and the nickname stuck."
