Good grief, The Good Life was not on the list! We can add it. This was a #18 pop hit and #7 adult contemporary hit for Tony Bennett in June 1963. It's an English-language version of La Belle Vie, which was written by Jean Broussolle (lyrics) and Sacha Distel (music) and first recorded by Distel on December 6, 1961. Jack Reardon wrote the English lyrics. He also co-wrote the Kalin Twins' 1958 top-ten hit When.

Silly me. When I reposted this list, I thought it was complete. I found another big hit that is missing. When I Fall In Love was written by Edward Heyman and Victor Young and was first recorded by Victor Young as the instrumental theme song of the 1952 movie One Minute To Zero starring Robert Mitchum and Ann Blyth. The song was a hit for Doris Day in 1952, Etta Jones in 1961, Donny Osmond in 1973, Natalie Cole in 1988, Céline Dion & Clive Griffin in 1993......and the Lettermen, whose version reached #7 on the Hot 100 in January 1962 and was not on the list – until now.

I heard this one today – and it isn't on the list. Drat! Cuban-born conga player Ramón "Mongo" Santamaría had five chart hits in the 1960s. Watermelon Man was the biggest, reaching #10 on the Hot 100 in April 1963.

"Another top-ten hit missing from the list?" Sadly, yes. David Ruffin was a member of the Temptations from 1963 to 1968. Walk Away From Love, his biggest solo hit, reached number one on the R&B chart and #9 on the Hot 100 in January 1976 and is not on the list.....until now. (My Whole World Ended. Ruffin's first solo hit, reached #2 on the R&B chart and #9 on the Hot 100 in March 1969). Walk Away From Love was cut from 5:29 to 3:16 for release as a single. Here is the album version. The uncredited background singers are Albert Bailey, Diane Destry and Brenda Hilliard .

"Oh, dear, what can I do? Another song to add – today this makes two." Baby's In Black, written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney, appeared on the British album Beatles For Sale[ and the U.S. album Beatles '65, both released in December 1964. Many believe the song is about Astrid Kirchherr, a German artist and photographer who was engaged to Stu Sutcliffe, the Beatles first bassist. He died of a brain hemorrhage in April 1962. Kirchherr liked to wear black and that inspired Lennon to write the song – but it is not about her.

In 2010, Berlin-based Reprodukt published author/illustrator Arne Bellstorf's Baby's In Black: The Story of Astrid Kirchherr, Stuart Sutcliffe & the Beatles. It was in German. First Second Books of New York City published an English-language version in 2012.

Another song to add. Theola Kilgore (1925-2005) was originally a gospel singer. She released five R&B singles, 1960-66. Four were produced by, and written or co-written by, Ed Townsend, best known for his 1958 hit For Your Love. The Love Of My Man, her biggest hit, reached #3 on the R&B chart and #21 on the Hot 100 in May 1963.

Believe me, nobody is as frustrated as I am that I keep discovering songs that should be on the list but are not. Jimmy Clanton's Venus In Blue Jeans, written by Howard Greenfield and Jack Keller, reached #7 on the Hot 100 in October 1962. (The song was first recorded by Bruce Bruno and released as the B-side of Dear Joanne in May 1962. It failed to chart. Bruno was a member of the Hawks from 1960 to 1964.) Whoever drew the caricature of Jimmy didn't sign his name. I don't blame him!

Johnny Thunder, best known for his early 1963 top-ten hit Loop De Loop, released Tell Her under his real name, Gil Hamilton, in 1962. The song was written by Bert Berns (real name: Bert Russell) and didn't chart – but Tell Him, a remake by the Exciters, a quartet led by Brenda Reid, got to #4 in January 1963. It isn't on the list. Drat! If any other top-ten hits are still missing, somebody please – no pun intended – tell me! The album cover says "America's Number One Hit." It's wrong.

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, another big hit is missing from the list. I hereby officially add it. Peggy March, best known for her 1963 number-one hit I Will Follow Him, got to #26 in October 1963 with Hello Heartache, Goodbye Love. The song was written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore and George David Weiss and features The Hugo & Luigi Chorus on background vocals.

Hello Heartache, Goodbye Love got to #8 on the Fabulous Forty of KDWB in Minneapolis/St. Paul. The song did better there than in any other region. KFWB in Los Angeles played Hello Heartache, Goodbye Love – but it never appeared on their Fabulous Forty survey. KRLA in Pasadena played the song – but it never appeared on their Top 50 Tune-dex. It didn't make the Top 25 of WMCA in New York. It was on the top 40 of WLS in Chicago for only two weeks, peaking at #31.

Peggy March sang the song – lip-synched to it, actually – on American Bandstand, October 19, 1963. In 2025, Peggy (real name: Margaret Annemarie Battavio) continues to perform at fairs and concerts and on cruise ships. Here is her first television appearance, on The Perry Como Show, April 24, 1963. And yes, she lip-synchs to the recording – but Perry's orchestra replaced the fade-out with an ending.

I just..... "Oh no, don't tell me!" Okay, I won't. You know what I was going to say. Here is the song. Gene Pitney's Half Heaven Half Heartache got to #12 on the Hot 100 in February 1963.

Change "I may" to "I did." And I will likely find a few more. For your amazement and amusement, here is Gene Pitney's first single, Snuggle Up Baby, a duet with Ginny Arnell. They called themselves Jamie & Jane. This came out in March 1959. It never charted – and after you hear it, you will understand why.

We can add Petula Clark's You'd Better Come Home, a #22 hit in August 1965. It was written by Tony Hatch, who also wrote Petula's hits Downtown, My Love, I Know A Place, Round Every Corner and A Sign Of The Times and co-wrote Who Am I, Color My World, American Boys, Don't Give Up, Look At Mine, Don't Sleep In The Subway, I Couldn't Live Without Your Love and The Other Man's Grass Is Alweays Greener.

Here is the latest buzz – B. Bumble & The Stingers' Bumble Boogie, adapted from Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight Of The Bumble Bee, got to #21 on the Hot 100 in May 1961 and is not on the list. Until now. This features Ernie Freeman on piano, Tommy Tedesco on guitar, George "Red" Callender on bass and Earl Palmer on drums.

I wish I could get this list completed. Maybe some day I will. We can add I Wish You Love by Harlem-born jazz/R&B singer Gloria Lynne (real name: Gloria Wilson). Lynne released 55 singles between 1954 and 1976. Only seven made the Hot 100. I Wish You Love, her biggest hit, reached #28 on the Hot 100, #9 on the adult contemporary chart and #3 on the R&B chart in March 1964.

I Wish You Love, with lyrics by Albert Beach, is an English-language adaptation of Que Reste-t-il De Nos Amours ("What will become of our loves"), a French song written in 1942 by Léo Chauliac and Charles Trenet. Beach also co-wrote, The Wedding, a late 1958 hit by June Valli and the Joe Reisman Chorus.

It breaks my heart that I found yet another big hit missing from the list. Elvis Presley & The Jordanaires' One Broken Heart For Sale, written by Otis Blackwell and Winfield Scott, reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1963. On the Cash BoxTop 100, the song spent two weeks at #10.

My word! The Beatles' Words Of Love is not on the list. Their remake of the 1957 Buddy Holly song appeared on the 1964 British album Beatles For Sale and the 1965 U.S. album Beatles VI (which was actually their seventh U.S. album).
