Sundials in most areas will not be correct on Sunday...

My sleep schedule shifts an hour with these time changes, which can be a pain for a while… but I never actually “lose” or “gain” an hour of sleep. I don’t do anything or have an alarm set the Sunday of the time changes so I just sleep until my body is ready to wake. I get my regular 7 hours.

The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established a standardized national schedule for time changes. States can choose to stay on standard time year-round without Congressional approval. Arizona and Hawai'i have done so. But states can't choose to stay on daylight saving time year-round without Congressional approval. As longtime CBS news anchor Walter Cronkite liked to say, "That's the way it is."

There is a small part of Ontario which is on CDT/CST and this is the area which will be affected. Their time currently matches Manitoba and now will continue to do so. All the provinces west of Ontario are now on permanent DST. Lucky bastards.

On July 14, the House of Representatives, by a vote of 308 to 117, passed H.R. 139, the Sunshine Protection Act, which will make daylight saving time permanent. The resolution now has to be passed by the Senate – and Senate Majority Leader John Thune believes it will never get the required 60 votes. He hasn't even scheduled a vote on it – and the Senate is now in adjournment until November 9, eight days after daylight saving time ends.
