The Musical Instrument Thread

I guess I've kind of hit a rut lately. I'm not learning anything particularly new just rehashing the old lessons. I'm going to maintain focus on learning one or two things at a time, as opposed to trying to learn everything at once. I bought a scale poster amazon for like $8 it has all the scales to learn right in front of you. I've been going off that lately. I want to master all of those then work on arpeggios, I know chords for the most part, and I've got most of the changes down. I want to work on the real technical stuff down. The best way, to me, to learn a song is know what scale the song is based off of and in what key, and what chord progression. If you can do that the rest is easy.

I think I'm also due for a guitar upgrade, I have the Squier Affinity Strat, which is the low-end model. Not liking the tone I'm getting out of it. Not sure whether to get upgraded pickups or just pony up $500 for a Mexican Fender Strat.

And so it begins...

Word on the street is the Squier Custom Vibe series is better than the Fender MIM stuff.

Squiers have great necks. The Squier Standard line has alnico pickups, not ceramic like the Affinity.

And a Squier standard is like $30 more. Edit: I stand corrected, more like $200 more. For that price I could pay $100 extra to get a Fender Standard.

On Musician's Friend, a lefty Squier Standard Strat is $249. A lefty Squier Classic Vibe is $399. A lefty Fender Standard (made in Mexico) is $499. The Squier Standard has alnico pickups. The CV and Fender have ceramic.

Do this. For the extra 100, save a couple extra months and go bigger. For 100. You won't regret it. After all, it's not an extra 1000.

DRC House band?

We were playing Uprising. I was playing the synth intro with a heavy overdrive guitar, but with my new foot pedal, I've got a tone that layers the overdriven tone with a synth sound. It's got that big sound, but still feels like a guitar playing. I 'm digging the new Muse too.
Everybody's been swamped with work and family stuff, so we haven't been playing lately. Hopefully we can get back to it next month.

Steve is a badass. I've always loved his playing.
He had an album/band called the Atomic Playboys that was a favorite of mine from he late 80's. He's also a big fan of Flaminco.
That guitar he's playing is a Godin. It has the midi pickup in it to run the synthesizer I was talking about in the previous post. Around 4:09 you hear a string section start to accompany him. It's all coming out of his guitar.
