I play my guitar through headphones most of the time.

Headphones are good when you want to make noise but cant, but you aren't going to get a decent sense of your tone. See if you can find a time when your neighbors are all out and crank it up. You'll hear a big difference. With the line 6 you should be able to find a good tone.
